I recently came into possession of an extra 10 inch sub. My friend bought two only needed one so I took it off his hands. So as the title reads, is that do-able? Or are the voltages wrong and make my sub go boom? From what I read I think it may be. Most home stereos are 8 ohms correct? The sub is a dual 4 ohm VC so 8 ohm is possible. If it is, what would I use for a low pass filter? Some kind of resistor like are used for high freq for tweeters on coaxial speakers?
A sub is a sub... as long as you have a channel on your receiver to drive it.
You can do it. If your receiver doesn't have a separate sub channel, you can get a plate amp that has high and low level inputs and xover built into it.
yea get a plate amp and build a box for it like the Klipsch subs. sub down firing and port back. I really want to do this as well when i get some extra money

My current stereo has a tweeter, a 6.5 in mid woofer, and a 7 in low woofer. So could I just un hook the wire from the low woofer on speaker tower and go to the ten?
Is building a home stereo box different from a car stereo box port wise and such do to the different environment?
Check the manual for your reciever, check what impedance it's stable at. I'd guess no lower than 4 or 8 ohms.
Box is a box is a box.
should not be a problem, to be safe wire it to 8 ohms and all is good
I can go 2 or 8 ohm so definitely going to do 8. Haha.
Just be wary of how close you get the sub to your TV xD
check out avsforum.com, they've got all kinds of info on building your own sub setups for home using car audio and such.
Good suggestion Spitfire. Also, Most home receivers have a switch on the back for 4 or 8 ohm speakers. As for the box itself, I would try a ported box (bandpass or front vent type), but just be careful of the volume. It has been known to rattle everything in the house.

I just had a nasty idea now that the Type R is just sitting
Just gotta put the Diamond amp back together and get a power supply.
Or get a plate amp MADE for home use..... I don't ever understand why people go through such ghetto and extreme lengths to make a car amp work in home, when home amps are fairly cheap.
On the other hand....you have other fingers.

Mainly because the car amp is here and the sub is here and the box is here. I basically only need a $30 power supply. Makes more sense to me
one of my buddy's got a nice power supply and put a alpine deck into his bed frame and hes has two type r's under his bed and a 1000/1 jl amp
his neighbor keeps getting mad its really kinda funny

Funny until the cops show up due to a noise complaint.
nah, it'd be even funnier then...SPECIALLY if you happen to be the neighbour
its really a shame that being stupid doesn't hurt more
