Would a car sub work on a home system?
Saturday, May 09, 2009 11:03 PM
I recently came into possession of an extra 10 inch sub. My friend bought two only needed one so I took it off his hands. So as the title reads, is that do-able? Or are the voltages wrong and make my sub go boom? From what I read I think it may be. Most home stereos are 8 ohms correct? The sub is a dual 4 ohm VC so 8 ohm is possible. If it is, what would I use for a low pass filter? Some kind of resistor like are used for high freq for tweeters on coaxial speakers?

A sub is a sub... as long as you have a channel on your receiver to drive it.

You can do it. If your receiver doesn't have a separate sub channel, you can get a plate amp that has high and low level inputs and xover built into it.

My current stereo has a tweeter, a 6.5 in mid woofer, and a 7 in low woofer. So could I just un hook the wire from the low woofer on speaker tower and go to the ten?

Is building a home stereo box different from a car stereo box port wise and such do to the different environment?

Check the manual for your reciever, check what impedance it's stable at. I'd guess no lower than 4 or 8 ohms.

Box is a box is a box.

should not be a problem, to be safe wire it to 8 ohms and all is good

I can go 2 or 8 ohm so definitely going to do 8. Haha.

Just be wary of how close you get the sub to your TV xD

Good suggestion Spitfire. Also, Most home receivers have a switch on the back for 4 or 8 ohm speakers. As for the box itself, I would try a ported box (bandpass or front vent type), but just be careful of the volume. It has been known to rattle everything in the house.

Or get a plate amp MADE for home use..... I don't ever understand why people go through such ghetto and extreme lengths to make a car amp work in home, when home amps are fairly cheap.

Mainly because the car amp is here and the sub is here and the box is here. I basically only need a $30 power supply. Makes more sense to me

Funny until the cops show up due to a noise complaint.
