High amp. alternator connection help!!!!!
Wednesday, June 23, 2010 12:44 PM
Hi I am new to the forum and would like some help. I have a 1997 pontiac Sunfire with the 2.2 and tons of mods! Body kit, system, wheels, paint, interior etc. I have a very high powered system in my car and have opted to upgrade the alt. My issue is it is a 200 amp. alt and needs the charging wire to be a larger gauge wire but I dont know which wire to cut and attach the new wire to. I have already tried just hooking the alt. up ignoring the warning and had smoke come from the alt. and it was extremely hot! then I removed it and sent it in for repair. Now that it has returned I dont want to hook it up until the new wire is in place. Any help with this would be wonderful!!!!!

Take it to a pro and don't work on cars.

BTW, curious what this "high power system" is and if you have pics.

oh man, you NEVER ever cut wires this low of a gauge. first off you need to swap alternators, then you have to upgrade (replace) the wiring from alt to your battery which should be fairly easy on a cav.. me i have a cobalt and my battery is in the trunk so doing that would be a little more of challange. other than this task is very straight forward..

Just take a nice length of 4 gauge or larger wire. Put ring terminals on both ends of the length. Put one ring over the charge terminal on the alt and one over the pos on the battery. Done. No cutting necessary.

Thank you to all the ppl who posed some positive feedback with your help I think that solved my prob. BUT to JL-Audio cavalier I would first like to say I have tons of pics, trophies, etc for my car and trust me you def arent worth my time to upload them for you! Sec. you must think you are the all knowing car pro huh? try this, how long does it take to change oil in a Lambo and what does it cost? How about, list the entire process for making a tire. Do low pros take longer than standard tire to make? Where did fiber glass originate?? How tall is your cav from the ground to roof stock from factor specs? How long did it take the manufacture to make your car? Now with out you searching the net you cant answer one of those questions so you need to SHUT THE HELL UP if you have nothing nice to say but I forgot your mom didnt teach you that!

Im going to leave this topic with this note. I came here for help with a prob. thats what forums are for. Not one! as you can see in my pic my vehicles are just about flawless with taste and done all myself so why come at me?? Like I said the pos ppl who helped me I thank you, you negative ppl have a lot of growing up to do! I know what Im doing and if I dont Im man enough to ask for help.Building my car for under 5000. as is so far is damn good and If you guys werent scattered all over the country Id tell you to come out to the next show and line up next to mine(take your pick on which one). Whats funny is the last time I checked there was only one ALL KNOWING god some where out there lmao.

Careful joey, if we both bash him, we must be gay lovers. Ugh some people...

And to answer ur question about knowing everything, I at least know how to install and wire a goddamn alternator. I know more about car audio on my drunkest night than you probably will ever know about cars in general. You're a damn troll. I can't believe how quick you got offended. And after seeing your poor taste in exterior mods and seeing your over all idiocy. I reeeaaaalllyy want to know what "system" you have. Mind you, car audio is my thing. From a super clean daily install to an all out loud substage. Especially when it comes to high end gear and top notch finish work. You can't touch me. That's the most arrogent thing I have said, but wouldn't say it if it weren't true.

normally i agree jl can be a bit of an ass, but on this one he's spot on. i was going to post the exact same advice, to go let a pro do it because your very first post said. you IGNORED THE WARNING and just hooked it up causing it to smoke. wich means you were told the proper way of doing it and ignored ti to just throw it in. if you didn't know something, thats one thing, but when you know something, and just ignore it because your to lazy to do it the right way. then its your own fault. and honestly i'd have no issues lining up next to you at any show out there.

First link to come up

Quote:

PREVENTING ALTERNATOR FAILURES
When an alternator fails, what do you do? Replace it with a new or remanufactured unit? Hopefully, you install an alternator that has the same or higher amp rating as the original. Higher is often better, especially when a vehicle has a high-wattage audio system, auxiliary lighting or other amp-hungry accessories. If it seems likely that high amp loads on the charging system caused the original alternator to fail, you should install a high output replacement alternator. A high output alternator will cost more, but it should save you money in the long run by extending alternator and battery life.

High output alternators are available from a number of suppliers. Some are brand new units, while others are remanufactured units that have been rewound to produce more amps. High-output alternators are typically rated at 140 to 225 amps. The better units can produce 70 to 100 amps at idle, which is double the output of most stock alternators.

Higher outputs are achieved by rewinding the stators and rotors, tightening up clearances and using an undersize pulley to spin the alternator faster. This really helps at idle, and boosts the charging output throughout the rpm range. Most have heavy-duty diodes that can handle more current and heat, and better bearings to improve durability. Some also have special heat-resistant ceramic coatings and insulation on critical parts. Chrome-plated, anodized and brightly painted housings are also available for those who want to dress-up their engine compartment.

Some of these units are direct bolt-on replacements for the OEM alternator. Others require some modifications to install (changing or relocating brackets and splicing wires). In either case, the wiring harness that handles the alternators output must be beefed up with heavier-gauge wiring. Use 2GA wiring for 120- to 140-amp alternators, and 1/0GA wiring for 140- to 225-amp alternators Some suppliers of high output alternators provide an upgraded wiring harness with their alternator, and will NOT honor any warranty claims unless the wiring harness is also installed with the high output alternator..

ouch!

I hear rumors that someone close to the bash's location bought Joey's car... Making me tempted to go this year, even though I don't think I can
