...like Eric Cartman at a NAMBLA meeting.
So, I was going over a speedbump in my apartments, I had to jam on the breaks because of a kid running out between cars, and when I tried to go again, my clutch pedal wouldn't return, and whenever i tried to go in gear, or give it more throttle above idle, i'd get an awful grinding noise.
I was able to reduce this to either the clutch, flywheel, or throwout bearing. Given that i have a Spec aluminum flywheel and stage 3 clutch, my money is on the last two seeing how people have had problems with them in the past. Also, seeing as how unil recently i wasn't exactly easy on her, i can see those two as a point of failure.
Anyhow, i need opinions, since i don't want to downgrade unless i have to. I'm set on a SPEC stage 2 clutch (Stage three is a bit too harsh and i no longer drag her), so i'd like opinions on aluminum flywheels and/or throwout bearings. Anyyone have any good experience with any specific brand for the 2.4/getrag manual? I won't instantly throw out spec for the flywheel, since it did last over 70,000 miles. but if anyone has really put a lot of abuse on an aluminum flywheel, and will swear by it, let me know.
Thanks.
P.S. i know it's not the engine because the engine idles just fine and everything else is solid.

sounds more like you lost the hydraulics end , not the clutch itself
if the pedal is on the floor , and your not hearing any odd noises , then its gotta be hydraulic
my bet is you lost the slave cylinder on the firewall
Also check your brake fluid and lines, make sure it is not low at all. I also agree with Eric it is a Hydraulic problem.

oh, there is odd noises...i just didn't mention that. All of the fluid is fine (even clutch fluid), she makes a horrible noise when starting, idles fine, clutch pedal goes the the floor, only has partial power when engaged, and makes a horrible sound whengiven throttle above 1500rpm--as if something is hitting the driveshaft.
brakes, CV's, and the like are fine. While i won't rule out slave or master cylinder, i'm willing to bet it's clutch, flywheel, or throw-out. I'll know for certain tonight if i can get it up[ on the jack and look at it.

Unless i'm missing something, it's definitly not the slave cylinder. checking under my car tonight, through the window that you can check the clutch with at the bottom of the bellhousing, i can move the flywheel and clutch assembly back and forth along the axis of the flywheel.

oh, and checked...visually spotted it. the flywheel sheared off right before the mounting bolt holes...
ouch.
ahh well, new clutch and flywheel are on the way. And amazingly enough, i won't say anything bad about them. The Spec aluminum flywheel lasted 70k miles, and the stage III clutch, which probably still has life in it, lasted the same.
Will go with a Fidanza aluminum flywheel and a spec stage 1 (since i'm no longer racing her). Let's see if TurboTechRacing is a good online store to get them from

good choice on flywheel man... i have the fidanza one and love it so far and i dont even have 1k on her yet...
^^Well, my SPEC one lasted 70k. i'm hoping the extra .5lbs will make it last a few more miles.
Anyhow, will get pics of the flywheel itself when it's taken out.

You know the Spec and Fidanza flywheels are the same ones, same weight. Still a good choice.

you been here HOW LOOOOONG ?????? you outta know better than to give a partial story !!!!
shame on you , you loose your keeper of the light privilege !!!
LOL , if youda said it was making alot more noise , id said it was the flywheel snaped in the center
how many miles you got on callisto now? you must be well over 100 by now....I remember you bringin her home new...wow I'm getting old
replace that slave cylinder at the same time man. trust me. i had the exact same thing happen to me. and you might as well get it done while your in there.
convert to external like I did...I'll never go back
You should post some pics.

Brent: it should come with one--when i swapped in the stage 3 and the spec one, it did. So, i will do
DTP: if you can post some links on how to do an external, and if it won't break my bank, i might do it, but i don't have the facilities to do much of it myself (damned apartments).
And yes, i will post pics, i have to GET the replacement ones first.
And yes, she's about 100367 or so. Engine is still going strong (knock on wood).

actually he DID mention a noise in his first post

first struggle is getting an ext slave trans...which can be found in most any older quad 4 car...which includes the stronger muncie trannies...granted ususally high miles, but those trannies took a beaten and kept goin. You'll need the line, and the slave with the trans from the donor car....after that just switch the line onto your clutch master cylinder and install....fairly straight-forward
Slave and tranny? ouch. i don't think there's any way to get that done in time, and i need my car operational by June 7.
Though, procedure is noted

don't you gotta yank the trans to replace the flywheel anyways?
^^that would entail me:
Finding a good muncie getrag transmission--and having the dosh to spend on it.
Making sure it was good and if not rebuilt.
Making sure everything would mate up.
Getting a tranny shop to do the work (since i don't have the facilites.
Having the dosh to get this done.
And get it all operational by June 7th.
Ain't going to happen this time.
