compared to the 5spd. it seems as if 1/4 mile times are between 4-5 tenths slower for the auto with similar mods.... how can this gap be eliminated or minimizaed?
In all honesty there is only a few things you can do to really improve on the 1/4 mile times of a auto trans. One and probley the biggest is a stall speed I know yank used to make one for the cavy but not sure if they still do or if you can find one sometimes I see them on ebay or the classifieds. You can also get a trans intersepter to improve your shift firmness but I really dont think that its going to help your times cuz all its doing is changing your line preasure so that it hits harder less slip but hard on parts for no reason in my opinion. Now if you get a stall and want to go really into it get the HpTuner software and you can tune so stuff off like abuse mode and chnge your shift times and rpm that will help alot but you have to be careful cuz you can wipe a trans out easy if you change the wrong stuff. Other than that not to sure if there is much more you can do.

yank 3000rpm stall torque convertor
autotrans interceptor or b&m shiftplus
hp tuners tuning software to fine tune the tranny
(all as said above, just making it clearer)

Yep. You can change the final drive gears, between 4t40-E and 4T45-E. It might be possible to change 1st and 2nd between the two, but I think no one has tried.

thnx guys, i got the b&M im tryin to get the autotrans, and hptuners is comin after i get my built motor in, just wanted to know if i coulf at least narrow the gap... i appreciate it.....
if u already have the b&m, why do u want to go with the ATI? ive heard the ATI is easier to install etc do the plug n plug ability, but im sure the shiftplus works just as well. i wouldnt mind having a lil control module inside the car,but to be used with the ATI, i really like that about the shiftplus.
and even so, when u get HPT, your not going to need either of the tranny 'bandaid" parts any longer as you would be able to tune it far better with HPT.
You'll never approach the times that a stick will give you.
The auto tranny has the torque convertor so you never really have a direct hookup to the engine. Because of that, you're getting only a percentage of the power down that the stick will give you total power to the ground.
Even with the 3000 stall speed convertor, your daily driving will be affected by the slippage that is encountered with the higher stall speed and gas mileage will suffer too.
You advantage with the 3000 stall speed convertor is that you can launch at 3 grand which gets you closer to your powerband at launch.
If anything, you can change out the 3rd gear which is a pretty wide gap from the 2nd gear. If you could get a closer ratio for 3rd, you'll probably lose about 1-2 tenths with your times. 1st and second are outstanding with the 4t40e tranny but the 3rd gear sucks a$$ in comparison.
Those that race the auto tranny cars know this and a replacement for that 3rd gear would alleviate alot of drop in rpms which take you out of the powerband.
Lastly, an LSD would be helpful too. They do make one for the 4t40e tranny but will set you back about 700 bucks.

i thought a team green or phantom grip LSD would work... ????

That's for the stick shift tranny.
Here is the info on the limited slip for the 4t40e tranny.
I'll eventually have one for my tranny when it comes time to rebuild.
TTR tranny mounts will help as well.

i still dont get it, both differentials are the same for both tranny's arent they?
and on that website it lists the same LSD for all the 3rd gen j trannys, auto or manual... then its got another one right next to it that can be used with the 4t40e, but the way i see it, both will work. and if it will work in both tranny's, then a phantom grip or TG insert should work i believe. this LSD unit is worth its $625.00 tho, its the right way to do it, not just by using an insert in the stock diff.

^^^nope. if they were, we'd take the same CV axles.
Unless you're putting out enough power that the amount of time it takes to manually shift is going to matter, about the best thing you can do is make a bit more horsies or somehow lower the amount of drivetrain loss to compensate.
The autotrans, though, does help a bit. a member of JBNW did notice faster time whern it was installed, be a couple of tenths.

huh? as far as I know the driver side axel is identical-its the passenger side thats the different one. the auto tranny has a much larger section that covers the whole back side of the engine-therefore it needs a small axel, rather than the long assed 5spd one.
unless im missing something here, i just dont get it
lol, sorry.
