Offset Question

My understanding of Offset in a little unclear..... Is the offset measured from the outside of the rim inward.....so a rim that has a 40mm? offset will work.....so 40 mm from the outside in.....is that correct ? konig freefalls in gloss black.....will they work? the car is lowered 2 inches roughly and i have a set of 17's on it now...offset im not to sure of...... thanks for any info

Offset is measured from the centerline of the wheel to the mounting face (where it contacts the rotor or drum) of the wheel. The "offset" is from center of the wheel.
The polarity convention is that when the mounting face is towards the outside of the vehicle ( most fwd ), the offset is positive. When the mounting face is inside of the centerline (lowrider style), the offset is negative.

Cavs run around 47mm positive offset - they tuck in the wheelwell more than most aftermarket wheels. Having said that, wheels in the more common +40mm range works pretty well on Cavs with 6" or 7" wide wheels.

Remember, the wider wheel you use, you must run less positive offset to keep from hitting the strut on the inner side of the wheel, ( i.e. for an 8" rim, you might use +35mm or less offset).

It looks like you are OK if your rims are 7" wide or less.

I have a simular question if i get 18"x7.5" rims with a 225x40x18 tire will i have a probelm with rubing on eibach sportlines? or should i use the pro kit? also from what ur saying i should get the 35mm offset and not the 45mm offset? thanks

I generally recommend the higher offsets since it's easy to adjust outward but impossible to adjust inward.

Tim: Those should fit fine.

CC: I'd go with the +45's rather than +35's. I've got 18x1.5 +45 with 225/40/18 and with my brake kit, I could actually use a set of +50's. I had to make adjustments because they were hitting my rear fender on one side.

Shouldn't it be the opposite because the wheel with a 35 mm offset would be farther out of the wheel well than a 45 mm. also with ur 18x7.5 rims do u have lowering springs if so do u have a problem with rubing?
Thanks for the help

Ok lemme see if Im getting this..

So with an 18x7.5 rim with +42 mm offset.. its going to tuck in the well more than stock Cav rims? So I may need spacers if I have any clearance issues? Although with the Toyota fenders I think I have maybe an inch or more than to give.

I thought Cavs had like +45mm offset, its actually more like +47?

Ok you know what I think I found the answer to my own question.

Because of the width of the wheel (7.5) there's no way Ill need spacers. Which explains the +42 offset.

But Im begginig to think 225/40/18 may not be a wise tire choice. The fronts may clear with the Toyota fenders but I may have probs in the rear.

Mental Note: Searching does help.
