Title says it all, I'm just wondering if I can get some 17x7 rims with a +40mm offset with my 205/40/17's to fit on a 2002 4 door cavalier. Any help is greatly appricated.
I wouldn't put 205/40/17's on a j-body.
They'll technically fit but they'll look ridiculous and cause issues in the long run.
You'll rack up the miles quicker on the odometer and be running the drive train faster than normal in order to maintain speeds. This will cost you in gas and wear and tear on the car. The speedometer will read faster than you're going.
So basically, don't do it. Sell the tires to someone who can use them (Maybe a Civic? Geo Metro?) and get proper sized tires for the j-car.
You want 215/45/17 or 225/45/17. If you want narrow tires for some reason (winter maybe) then you can use 205/50/17.

I have a question for you Weasel ??? or anybody who can answer this I am fairly new to the whole tire size and rims in general but Currently I have 215/45/17 Nankang NS1 Tires I would like to have more height or sidewall which ever it's called, reason's are 2 : First reason is to cover more gap and second I prefer to have more sidewall due to where I live and don't like low profile tires I actually like more rubber if possible so what would be the best option for me would it be 205/50/17 or just 225/45/17 which will give me what im looking for. Thanks in advance.

If you want more sidewall, you need smaller wheels. If you want less fender gap, you need to lower the car.
You should maintain the same tire height that the car was designed for.

Wildweasel How To and I sorta get the idea but my question still remains would I get more sidewall without too much dramatic issue or change with my speedometer I would accept minor inaccurate MPH so the question remains. Thanks in advance.

I mean narrow as in the tread width. So looking at your car from the back, the tires would be less wide.
This can be better for driving in the snow because you've got more weight pushing down onto a smaller contact patch, which can dig down into deep snow better.
too hype, go with 225/45/17 for more sidewall. that's what I'm running and based on some of the potholes I've drilled I'm glad for that extra little bit. Also, 225/45 is closer to stock size than 215/45

Thanks ... I figured 225/45/17 was the way to go ... appreciate your response ... because I am not sure about narrow tires .... I always thought Wider is better .. lol I think it's a pontiac commercial ... or something ... anyways ... I'll check more into pricing ... in my area... Thanks Derek and Weasel again ...

For 17s--215/45/17..For 16's--205/50/16...For 18's--225/40/18...And 19s are just too big to make any tire fit same as stock total diameter. thats my understanding as far as keeping the total diameter stock for spedo/wear/mileage issues

Wider is generally better. Winter can be the exception to that though. For winter, it can be good to trade off a bit of width to bite into the snow better.
For you, I think the best option is 225/45/17.
you guys do realize that the 45 is an indication of sidewall size right? the 225 should be the widest point of the tire carcass, now if i'm wrong someone set me straight, but to the best of my knowledge that 45 is your side wall, so if you want more sidewall you want a 50 if you want less you want a 40.
