These guys are right about the warm water and a towel. but if you have plastic or alloy (dull aluminum) rims, give this a try. make sure you have rubber gloves and safety glasses first! Get a can of Easy OFF oven cleaner heavy duty and a green scour pad. With the rims dry, soak the rim with the easy off and begin scouring untill the stains are gone. rinse well with water and do one rim at a time. *note this is only for severly stained/dirty rims*

Have Fun!

No offense, but you gotta be mentally impaired to use Easy-Off on a nice set of rims.

simple green and a wash mitt. blue pen erasers work well for cleaning stubborn bits, works great.

Definitely go with warm water and a towel. I wouldn't take any chances.

Once in a while i use Turtle Wax scratch and scuff remover on my wheels. Even after washing them there are usually some stains left from burnt on brake dust, dirt and tar.

The scratch and scuff remover works really well on painted wheels....Also, once you have the wheels really clean, wax them. <--Helps a lot.

Warm water and a towel???

Definitely at least use some car wash soap on them to loosen the dirt and carry it away! If you're just using water and a towel, you're going to just grind the dirt in and mark the surface.

I find dish soap is the best for taking off the grease spots and stuff. It'll cut right through crap that car wash soap doesn't emulsify. Never use it on the body as it'll strip the wax and stuff, but on the wheels it can be a god-send.

all of you guys are girls........Once again, I work at wheelworks and deal with rims and tires everyday. Use moratic acid.....it is extremely tough @!#$. it will eat through concrete and asphault, so do it in gravel....pour some of this acid in a plastic container, take a small wirebrush, one of those that looks like a toothbrush, dip it in the acid and scrub the @!#$ like no other. TRUST ME, it will take EVERY thing you want off. The bes tpart it, it wont take clearcoat off. Keep a hose handy, everytime u are doubting the safety of it, just rinse it down. That is also another nice thing, it is safe to dollute it with water. When your done cleaning the wheel, make sure to hose down the wheel heavily.

what he said about the simple green, even diluted a bit works amazing!! i swear by that stuff, lol. never tried the eraser tho. also for the tar, i had to wash both sides of my car with gas to get the tar (unavoidable construction, it was badddd) off, but just wax em up afterwards and they're good to go!

Scrubbing with a wire brush dipped in acid won't harm the clearcoat? You gotta be kidding! I just hope you aren't posting this just so you can sit back and laugh at some some poor idiot who listened to your advice and wirebrushed his wheels in acid. Purposefully posting to incite someone to damage his vehicle ought to be a serious offense, in my opinion.

Hey Dumb***, before you go blabbing your mouth about me trying to hurt some1's car, why dont u actually try it, or go to a dealership or a wheelshop and ask them....they will tell you the same thing. Muratic acid WILL NOT eat through clearcoat. I do it everyday for our dealership cars taht come in and customer cars taht come in and want their wheels cleaned. im not saying take a damn rag and wipe acid all over the wheel, because u will ruin sh*t, if you are smart, you will be fine, and it will clean the wheel right up. So unless you work at a dealership/shop, besides the point we are called "WHEELworks" yea, you can shut your mouth, thank you very much, i think i have proved my point.

Yes, I would say that your words say a lot about you. You have definitely proven something. Just what that is will be for each reader to decide. The fact that you have a job cleaning wheels for a living obviously supports your hypothesis that you possess a superior intellect. Your knowledge of how to clean wheels right down to the bare metal is beyond all reproach. But If it's all the same to you, I'll continue to keep things like wire brushes and acid away from any surfaces that I am interested in protecting. And when I wash my car, I'll stick to a sponge. A wire brush might get my car "cleaner", but I prefer to play it safe.

I dont clean wheels for a living, its just part of what I do. Part of working at an automotive shop, sometime you work on brand new @!#$, sometime people bring in rims that were never taken car of. Unless you want to sit there with soap and water for the 5 hours I am there, and have your boss look at you like a retard trying to get caked on brake dust off, I suggest you find a better way. And considering you have aboslutly nothing to back you up, other than your thick skull. For your homework assignment tonight little buddy, I want you to take a rim, and dump muratic acid on it, come back two hours later, and figure out for yourself whether or not the clear was eaten away. Then you can get back to me on that one. Enough said.....
