changing tires and speedo being off
Wednesday, March 22, 2006 12:23 PM
i changed my rims and tires from my winter tires to a 17" rim with a low profile tire so if you set the tires side by side the aftermarket tire is smaller than my winter ones so what i would like to know is if it is going to change my speedometer or if it will mess up my odometer... and is there any way to check if its off and fix it... any help is welcome.. thanks in advance!

Yes it will.

If you got some 215/40/17 ricer tires that are too small for the car then it will throw off your speedometer, rack up mileage faster on your car, put excess wear and tear on your engine, and probably a few other nasty things I'm not thinking of right now.

If you want lower profile tires then you need bigger wheels.

Check these links out to get an idea of what you're likely doing wrong.

yes it will and its not good. only for the main reason like ww said is it will put more miles on your car than there actually is. for 17s the smallest you can go and still keep everything accurate is 215/45/17

well like weasel and bagged have already said, this is a big no no. you should have asked this before you even bought the things, but too late now.

there is at this moment no way to recalibrate your speedo as it is controlled by the ECU. HP may provide the capability in changing your wheel diameter, i havent looked into it.

i would however like to know what size we are talking about here and what size your car came with OE. for all we know, your aftermarket rims and tires could be the correct size and your snows are too large for your vehicle. usually being withing 3% plus or minus is ok, but i tend to prefer a half of an inch or less with my vehicles.

post up the following info:

what size are your snows?
what size are your summers?
what size DID your car come with originally (found on the drivers door jam)?

like i said, your snows could be bigger and your summers the right size. if thats the case, your rims are only on for a few months anyways, then its all gravey depending on how far out they are.

you can also use 225/45/17
215/45/17 is what most say to use but 225/45/17 can be used with out messing with you speedometer

May be your winter tires are not the right size. It has been know that the thread on some tires have have them a little taller but no by that much.

well 215/45/17 is the right tire size. that tire is gonna look smaller than your winter ones because the rim is bigger on the 17s

My recommended tire size is 205/55/16 and this is the size my snow tires are also... however my summer tire size is 215/45/17... this will be fine right???? and the 205/215 numbers is just the width correct

yes 215/45/17 is the correct tire size (atleast 1 of them) and the 205-215-225-235, etc... is the width of the tire. the second number is the height of the sidewall.

example your tire the 215/45/17

215- width of tire
45 - sidewall height (45% of 215)
17- rim size

Nothing. If the wheels are the correct size, the speedometer should be reading accurately. Nothing to worry about.
