OK, I have a stupid newb question . I have a set of toyo proxys in 225/35/19. WHould would be the best air pressure to put in them for everyday driving?

if you read on the side of the treadwall, it should tell you. it being a 35 series tire, I'm going to guess around 55, but again, that's just a guess.

id say 42 psi for daily, if you race, drop it to about 37 or so

NO!!!

The sidewall will tell you the maximum inflation pressure. You NEVER inflate your tires to the maximum! When the tires heat up, the air inside will expand and easily exceed the maximum listed on the sidewall.

Not only that but your tires will be slightly bulging in the middle and you'll get uneven tire wear, reducing their life by quite a bit.

With those tires, I'd start around 37 psi and then judge from the wear how you need to adjust. If you find them wearing a bit more in the middle than towards the sides, then go down to 36 or 35. If you find that you're getting a bit too much roll on the sidewalls or they're wearing toward the outside, go up to 38 or 39.

call the retailer, ask them...but i have to agree with weasel, they don't put the psi on the wall for fun

weasel, you are the only one who knows what the hell he is talking about.

as some of you know because i talk about it often, i work in a tire shop. ive actually just finished my shift tonight.

when inflatting a tire, you never go by the sidewall. as weasel said, it is the maximum inflation pressure. there are alot of variables that go into commig up with the inflation pressure of a tire, and dispite al the physics i know, i have yet to figure it out

anyways, i just cheat and use the charts and tables i have available to me at work! so here goes:

here is a picture from the table i am using. the top portion of the table shows the original size of the j-bodies. once the tire size is found, which is highlighted in blue, we look accross and find the load that tire can withstand at the recomended pressure by the manufacturer. in all casses, the 14, 15, and 16 inch tire sizes all have a recomended pressure of 30 psi.

@30psi
14" = 1224
15" = 1190
16" = 1179

now for the pressure on your 19" wheels we need the info from the original sizes. the load rating needs to be maintained for the car to opperate safely and the tire to not blow out on you.

so theres the lesson and heres your pressures:
if your original size was the 14", run your 19" tires at about 41 psi
if your original size was the 15", run your 19" tires at about 40 psi
if your original size was the 16", run your 19" tires at about 39 psi

i would probably start out about 39 and work your way up or down from there. if the car handles too tightly, go down a pound. if it is too loose, go up a pound. i would not exceed 41 psi unless you are very confident in your driving skills, as the higher the pressure the less understeer the car will have. most drivers are not capable of handling a car when it is in an oversteer condition.

before you start inflating your tires, make sure the tire can handle the pressure. if the pressures i have recomended exceed the maximum psi, only run them at the maximum cold inflation pressure. most low profile tires like this are either 36 psi or 44psi.

if you or anyone else have any questions about tire pressure let me know. i have obtained a cd copy of the information we use at work. this will be my last post for the month, as i only have one left and im too cheap to upgrade to premium (for now atleast).
if you need an answer tonight, either email it to me at robolivieri@hotmail.com or wait till tomorrow when it will be april and i get a whole whack of new posts to make

enjoy,
rob aka whitegoose
