My cavalier... the two back tires have studs that are longer then they are supposed to... i found this out when i used lug nuts that are open on the end. well i got some spline-drive ones today, my back wheel has four that are longer then standard and one that is really long, and the other side just has 5 that are to long for the open end lug nuts.... I was told (by my dad) that it wont matter when i use lug nuts with a closed end. Is this correct? It seems wrong and i dont really trust him that much.. Let me know. Thanks
I'm confused. How can studs be too long for open ended nuts? What's stopping the nuts from going all the way tight?
If you've got closed nuts then I can see it being an issue since the nuts can only go so far before they run into the end of the lugs.
Well, i had my tires rebalanced.... so when i got my car back the studs were so close to the end that i couldn't get the tool to fit inside the open ended lug nuts, therefore i could not get them off.
Ah! I understand.
When you said open-ended, I was picturing the stock style, not the tuner style.
My bad. Now it makes sense!
Yes, they can certainly be a problem with closed ones if they hit the stud before tightening down on the wheel.
my suggestion, but talk to a dealer or repair shop prior, is to measure the depth of the lugs you want to use and then measure that on the stud with the wheel on (maybe use just a noraml nut and washer to hold the wheel on the hub), then cut the stud off, or have the dealer do it for saftey reasons if you so choose, cut them about 1/4" to the wheel side of the line you made on them. this should make them all the same legnth and allow you to torque the lugs down correctly without hitting the back wall of the spline-drive(closed end) lugs. should help with the tuner open end ones as well.
what do you think weasel?
P.S. i read your how to pages weasel, good info. maybe this can be add as a "if this" situation on your aftermarket wheel install page.
Well, i have twn new studs... i'm just going to replace them all it cant hurt anything. I read the How to on the forums... My question to you guys is how does seating the wheel mess up the rim? And how to i know if its seated... If i replace all five and use my spare tire and tighten them down and everything does that mean its seated now and i can stick my aftermarket rim back on without it being damaged... When i'm looking at this i just dont understand how its going to hurt the rim. Thanks
