I've got a '02 2 door Z. I'd like to convert the passenger side window switch to have the auto down like the driver side switch does. Has anyone done this, or know about how to do it? Thanks for any info.

Yea that would be a nice feature eh? One may wonder why it never came that way...
there's gotta be some sort of control module in the wiring that you should be able to hook up to the passenger side switch.
Oh, let's research this further - I have always wanted to do this. I'll pull my switch today and see if there are any noticeable changes from one side to the other.

I thought about this more and it seems to me that it may just be as simple as gettin another driverside button from a car at the junk yard and putting it in for the passanger side. Maybe is will work or it may not but its work thinking about.

I think that putting another driverside switch in there will do the trick. Maybe blue cav can pick one up and see if my idea here is possible at all. Im going to pop mine out tonight as well and look around. We'll keep you updated.
If any junkyard in Northern VA HAD and Cavs or Fires, it sure would be nice.
I have yet to find one - ever. Cav and Fire owners in this area must be extra careful...

When you click down the drivers side if you listen closely you can here a click after a few seconds. Basically my understanding is that the drivers side internally probably has a timed relay that pumps out the +12 for the motors for a given amount of time and then simply clicks off.
If you tear apart the switch pannel the setup is all inside one big switch box, I doubt you would be very sucsessful trying to ram in 2 drivers door switches side by side without putting in alot of time and effort and I doubt it would look right.
I put in my own power windows, pulled them out of a stock cavalier but did all the wiring myself and used 4 relays to control the voltage to the motors. I've often thought about building a small little microcontroller that I can wire up to my alarm so when I arm the car the windows both roll up. For me it's really not that hard because I just need to send 12V through 2 of my relays and the windows will roll up, so have 2 inputs to the micro to know when the alarm is armed/disarmed, then 2 outputs controlling a small relay that sends the 12V to my power window relays.
Super simple, the code work is simple... but I'm worried about one thing, if the windows are already rolled all the way up how would the micro know not to try and roll them up when the car is armed? Because sending 12V to both DC power window motors for lets say 6 seconds after the car is armed if the windows are already rolled up I don't think thats very good for the motors.
So then I got to thinking about trying to incorperate a couple IR LED's to sense when the windows are rolled up (ie window rolled up, breaks the IR signal) and also putting in a temp sensor so when the car gets REALLY hot inside during the summer the micro slightly cracks the windows. And maybe a humidity sensor so that if it's raining out they would roll up automatically!
BUT... it just kept snowballing and becomming more and more work so I just said screw it and havn't thought about it since lol
I believe the control is inside the door not actually in the switch, or im almost 100% sure of it.
I have thought about doing my senior project to control all sorts of stuff in my car such as neons, leds, strobes, both interior and exterior, remote bottle open, purge, arming switch, windows, self made alarm, with a built in graphical lcd screen to display temps/voltage/amps etc.

Well, all I know is about two weeks ago I had my interior apart putting in sound deadener and while I was at it I upgraded the power wires going to my power window relays. I was playing around with that center switch and when I pressed the drivers side down I got 12V out, let it go it goes back down to 0V. Then I pressed it again but all the way to auto-down and had 12V on the line, let the switch go the 12V remained for a few seconds then I heard a click from within the switch and the line went back to ground. So thats where I get the idea it has an internal timed relay. Plus, why would they bother seperating the control and put it inside the doors? I might be wrong, remember I put mine in myself so it's probably not exactly like the stock ones are wired up, but it makes sense to me.
And what are you taking in school 03_CF_Blues? I like the sound of the project, when I went through school me and a couple guys in class wanted to do something similar but we were told it was too simple since it pretty much everything was exactly like a number of our labs so we could've just copied all the lab work and made it into a final project.
The control in the switch package not in the door. There is a Circuit Board in there with a single push button. When you press the driver window button all the way down it clicks the switch and the CB holds the voltage for a few seconds. You can't shove two drivers buttons in there. You would have to build a entirely new CB (very possible.) This has been a question on JBO for years. Good luck though.

If I can get a hold of the electronics board, I think I can do it. I'm asking on of my fellow J-body guys if he has one laying around his garage that I can have. What I'm thinking is that there is some sort of current sensing circuit. When the motor is all the way down, let's say, there's going to be more of a current draw and the circuit board detects that and "clicks off" the 12V. I work with a bunch of electrical engineers that live for this stuff, so if I can get a hold of one of the boards, get the schematic drawn and physical dimensions, I think they'd be all over it. I'm hoping to be able to get auto up and down on both sides.

The hardest part will be trying to figure out how to cram in the switches. The thing is the drivers switch has 4 positions (Rest, up, down, autodown) and the passenger only has 3 (rest, up, down)
The circuitry required to do the auto down feature is very simplistic for someone who knows a thing or two about electronics, it's the physical part that's going to be the bitch. If someone was to find a set of aftermarket switches that both had the auto down feature... you'd be laughing. But trying to use stock I'm not sure how well that will work.
I soppose another thing you COULD do for the passenger side is make the down position into an autodown. So now the switch would have rest, up, and autodown. It's slightly dumb because you couldn't just roll down the window a little bit easily, but you would have the auto down feature.
I am in Computer Engineering at the U of Iowa.
I was also going to have a temp sensor set to regulate fans on my amp so if above a certain temp the fans turn on.
I think I could make it a large enough project they may accept it, and I can even get money for the project from grants etc, time for some toys

From what I've read, these are for auto up and down on both sides, which is cool, but it takes out the momentary part of the switch. Whenever you hit the window switch, the window automatically goes all the way up or all the way down. If we can't figure out a way to do it with just the switches, I'll probably go this route.

Okay, nevermind. Apparently they do not do away with the momentary functions of the switches. They just behave a little different. Holding the switch down and then releasing it, or pressing the switch again in the same direction as when you first hit it will stop the window. I just looked up the window controller from Magnadyne.

the auto down is in the window switch , no where else in the car
and jarret like i told you there are after market modules that will do auto up and down
i had 1 in my 97 tell the window motors started going out
Well, I was just wondering if there was a way to do it without having to add in a module and add more wiring in the car. But, I guess adding in the module is the easiest way to do it.

Big Tom just to let you know some alarm manufacturers produce window control actuators that work with the aux options on their units. i belive code alarm makes one for there master module alarms.

DEI 530-T will do everything you guys are talking about. it actually gives both the drivers and passengers window not only auto-down, but auto-up as well. great for hooking up to alarms as well.
