GP Interest for CF dash trim
Friday, August 12, 2005 11:08 AM
I am checking to see if there is any interest in a full carbon fiber replacement ( not carbon fiber overlay ) dash trim piece for 95-99 Cavaliers. I was told $400 for 1, but we should be able to get it cheaper if we buy 25 or more to offset the tooling costs

Here is the piece that I am talking about.

Right now I am talking to Carbon by Design about doing it.

It is way too early to say, but Sunfires probably won't get done. A different mold will need to made for them and 00-04 Cavs for that matter.

id def be interested, but the price seems too steep though. think of it this way, ben sells his cf dash (huge top part) for like 300 (if im not mistaken). This think is like 1/4 the size of the huge dash top... get my point.

Yeah, I can see that point, but you are missing the point of what I want. I don't want the stock piece covered in carbon fiber. That would like me wanting to get my stock hood covered in carbon fiber. I want a whole piece made from carbon fiber except for the vents. To do that you need to make a mold of the piece, and the tooling to mass produce the part

yea I know start up costs can be expensive. Then again u coul prolly start a GP or something and get like 30 ppl, (im sure u can get more, thats a bada$$ part) then u could sell em for a more reasonable price, something like 200 or around that. just to get my point across, jim at gravana tuning sells the rksport carbon fiber carpet retainers, theyre full replacements, not covered for like 200. (see http://www.gravanatuning.com/applications/1997_Chevrolet_Cavalier_Coupe_2.2.aspx/4/2261/_Door_Sills_RK_Sport_Carbon_Fiber_Threshold_Cover_Carpet_Retainers)
but yea, i think u get my point. Im not trying to start an arguement or anything here (which usually happens), im just saying that if they were cheaper I garuantee you , that easilly more than 30 ppl would buy it. I know I would.

You guys are still looking at the $400 wrong. $400 is for a one off piece plus mold costs. It can only get cheaper with more people interested

get a price on a GP for say 20, 25, 30 etc so we can see how much the price will really decrease.

I'd love to see pic's of it once you get the prototype finished. Let me know if you do 00-02.

i would guess there wont be a prototype made, unless there are people to pay upfront, or they will lose too much money.

That being said, 400 is steep, but its much easier to lay CF on a flat surface than all the curves of that one, much more work is involved, its not the amount of cf used, its the possibly to mess up the weave when laying it. that makes the price go up.
