Hey guys, just thought id put up a pic of my work in progress. Not sure if anyone has done this before.
I moved the radio into the glove box (everything still works) and put in some gauges. I fabricated a sheet metal pannel to mount the gauges and switches.
I added one more gauge in the vent closest to the right side of the steering wheel but dont have a pic of it yet.
I use it as an AutoX car, so no Audio / Video stuff is going into this baby.
Hope you like it.[IMG]

So, you just going to lean all the way over to change CD's/stations?
Making a box and what not for your gauges and putting them under the HVAC would be more practical, but good luck.
I agree with the above, a little stretch when you are doing 60 and need to change the music. But you mention you use it for AutoX Plus, so why even have a stero??
The install on the stereo is rough, why not go the extra and box it in to? You asked, so we answered. SORRY
haha....i thought you guys would ask that....the truth is i dont listen to it all that much. I usually just leave it on one station or listen to a whole CD anyway.
I realize its not that practical but who said it had to be?
Im not in to the whole audio / video scene so for me its not that big of a deal.....headphones and an mp3 player work just as well too.
you need to get the steering wheel controls now
kick ass idea
An aftermarket deck with a remote would work too.....but like i said, i dont listen to it all that much anyway.....i kept it because i heard that the stock radio also has the cars computer in it....it sounds like that is not true?.....i thought i would play it safe but if i dont need it i might just take it out completely.
If anybody knows it will be you guys....will the car run ok if i take it out completely?
I have ran it without the radio but not for an extended period of time.
if you get rid of the stock unit, you loose your door chime, and key in the ignition chime. i think you may loose one more function, but its been so long since i took mine out, i cant remember what there was, lol..

you loose the chime through the speaker that is all you loose
i still think the steering wheel controls would be sweet
i woulda said aftermarket radio , but i saw the part you said more into racing than audio
plus aftermarket remotes are easy to miss place
having the stock controls on the steering wheel means you can change stuff pretty easy
You can get little trim rings to angle the gauges toward the driver. I think those would fit in nicely on the panel you made.

the chime when you leave your lights on.
Now that is really confusing me. Everyone is saying you'll lose your chime but so far I haven't and I replaced my stock unit with one from JVC. Open door with key in, chime. Leave lights on and car off, chime. Strange...

Yours is a 99 so it doesn't apply. In 2000, they integrated the head unit much more with the BCM. That's why the new ones don't have unlock codes anymore as well.
I believe it also depends on the year. I got a module from Circuit City with my wiring harness, so I still have my door chime, because I don't like dead batteries and I know I'm apt to forget about the headlights sometimes.

the chime is only part of the stereo systems on the 00-05 J's , not the 99-older
how did you attach the panel?
I bolted the panel using the existing holes that the radio used to mount to the dash. I made "cylindrical" spacers behind the panel that brought the panel flush with the plastic cover on the dash.....it took a while but i have all the dimensions now.
Hope that explains it....i have some CAD drawings. I could put them up if any of you guys are interested. (you could use it as a template).....i am away at school but when i go home this weekend i could post them.
pillar pods,
letting dudes kept there radio's with in arms reach since 97'
yea but being a little different is better IMO. Looks good. What are you planning on doing with your radio in there? Are you going to make a face plate for that too?
