Well i was thinkin the other day it would be cool to move the key ignition to where the cig. lighter is. How how would it be to move and how many wires is there to extend?

listening...
that would be cool - or even better, in the center console like a saab.
i will be taking out one this next week so i will check on the wires and such if i remember.
-Seth
it's easy to move, but your stearing wheel won't "lock" any more

steering wheels lock...???
how so??
O, and im thinking it would be a little easier to get to the igniton wires and stuff like if someone was trying to steal ur car - idk though
-Seth
it would kinda confuse someone abit to if they were in a hurry to steal ur car and hard to because they would have to get down there by the wires and wont be able to sit in the seat and stuff.

this sounds like fun
i got rid of my cig lighter and now theres an empty hole there
so please if anyone can do a simple how to thatd be great
also, what would u use to plug the hole in the column after u take the ign out?
steering wheel would lock that doesn't matter the botton looking thing that controls that can be moved almost anywhere in the area

I would leave the key where it is, and just put a push button start there, so you would turn the key on, then push the button to crank. just a little easier to wire.
My push button starter on my towncar is a cig lighter. Could do the same thing for the cav and I doubt anyone would figure out how to start your car.

I have push button start in my cig lighter location, easy to wire. But to the original question, it wouldnt be too hard at all to relocate the key but it would make stealing the car a 2 second job for someone. Not that it's really a hard thing to do in the factory location either though if someone has no regard for tearing the column cover off & the iginition is plastic as well lol. If you want to see how hard it is, remove the lower columnb cover & look at the black ignition box directly across from the key cyl. Those are the wires there that would have to be extended to where ever.
how does the ignition key thing come out of the column?

Can't remember exactly at the moment, but I recall you take the ignition off the left side of the column (with the annoying ass reverse torx style bolts), put the key in, turn it to on & then twist the entire key cyl towards the dash & it will release. Something like that. You'd have to check a manual for specifics but Id say its pretty much something as easy as that

Is the cig lighter actually working like a button or are you just grounding the ignition through the plug so it only works when you have the lighter in?
the cig lighter acts like a button, there is a normal starter button behind it that when you push in the lighter it gets pressed and cranks the motor.

i had a camaro with a relay problem in the ign, my friend wired it up to the power trunk switch on the centre floor con, yes you had to put the key in to have the constent power and unlock the steering wheel . that lock is removeable it's a cricle with cut outs for the pin to drop into just make sure you have someone around that knows what there doing car fire happen that way make sure the cig amp and the ign amp are the same 30 fuse i think?

im just gonna take out the ign. extend the wires to the cig lighter and install it there.

if you dont mind me asking why are you doing this?
In Loving Memory of Phil Martin December 14 2005
are you going to put a cig lighter in your steering column then?

maybe he doesnt need a cigarrette lighter.
something to do and i dont need a lighter because i dont let ppl smoke in my car at all. Plus im thinkin of movin it to somewhere else for the rador detector so i dont have the wire runnin from the window to the center console..

So let me get this one straight... you're going to move your ignition to the cig lighter location so you can move the cig lighter somewhere better for your radar detector? I'm still confused on why you would want a hole in the your steering column. And yet more confused on why you wouldn't just hard wire your radar detector and scrap the cig plug for it all together. Seems like a lot of random work and time for accomplishing nearly nothing. Just my opinion though. I say leave everything where it is and hardwire the detector.
maybe its cause he want to be different. let him alone and he can fiberglass the whole so no problem there.

you can fiberglass the hole for the ignition, and its a matter of making things custom. why mod if you dont wanna be different
RIP Kasey Burleson, and get well soon Chris Shelly
i need the cig lighter for my phone charger and other things i might get for it. I'm just movin the thing because i never seen anyone else do it.

I understand the need to be "different". This is why I stated it was nearly my personal opinion. I don't understand why you are telling me "let(leave) him alone," I was not attacking him, nor was I telling him not to continue with his plans, I was simply offering a more realistic approach to this scenario. One thing I still don't understand is why you wouldn't just hard wire the radar detector, that way you wouldn't have to worry about the cig lighter at all, and you would accomplish a much cleaner look IMO. Where were you planning on moving it?
