Aproach with open mind - 2 seater conversion
Monday, February 27, 2006 1:22 AM
One of my favorite cars is an MR2. I love most 2 seaters for that matter. But to cut you short - don't tell me "just buy one it'd be easier" because I don't have one. Plus modifying your car means making it unique and that's half the fun.

So on that note- I love the closeness, that feel of the tininess of the cockpit area in a 2 seater, wether its Mid-Engine or front engine. I've always wished that I had a 2 seater and the 2 door cavi is pretty close, especially if you rip out the back seats... so what do you think of the idea of a conversion?

Rip out the rear seats/seatbelts and come up with some way to finish the trunk floor so that it extends to behind the front seats. On top of that even, one might build some sort of separator to make the cabin feel apart from the now gigantic trunk. This seems like it would work great with my current plans to potentially cut out the spare well. One looong flat trunk. As for the separator, it could be carpeted and go up just above the center armrest in terms of height, then have either plexiglass the rest of the way up (though it'd be really hard to have this divider go around the entire interior, ceiling, etc) or even without the glass, just to get the feel that your seat is as far back as it can go. (I'm a tiny guy so even if it is cramped that's not really an issue haha) I mean if you do the divider with hollow plastic or something (that looks good of course) you could actually save some weight (maybe) between losing the under-seat heater-tubing and the rear seats/belts. This would certainly make for a unique Cavalier, no?

Any opinions, positive or... erm... constructive... are welcome.

It would be very easy to do

But personally I think its stupid... 2 seater cars ARE meant for performance, taking a @!#$box economy car and making it a 2 seater is almost an oxy moron

That cover is the sweetest ever! What's underneath it? Are you still able to use if for storage and such?

why dont you just do what a ton of people have already done with putting a sub box that fills that entire gap
except just make the front and dont put a hole for a sub
tons of people have done it
im working on one myself

Now I'm the one who's crying... of course if I could get an MR2 I would. I love those cars. I'd even be happy with an 80's one... but nobody wants to buy my car and I can't afford a loan right now in college... so looking for alternatives (plus would be fairly unique).

Also if I keep the Z I plan on supercharging it... so there goes the 'slow car' theory about having 4 seats.

By the way... that convertible 2 seater is f***ing amazing!

John on your car its looks good, you have a covertabel though so you can get away with it... in a coupe... no way

and Jesse, as for the "slow car" theory.... 2 things... 90% of this site at one point was "going" to or "planing" to boost there car... maybe 5% have, and the other 5% never cared to beging with, do it first then talk about it... and second a supercharged Z is still not fast, somewhat quick yeah but definetly not fast

alote of peeps realize after talking about it that boost costs upwards of 4 grand for a good setup..i decided to nitrous my car instead, pro installs run upwards of a grand and for drag nitrous i found it a good way to go.

It's all about what you like. Two seater Cavaliers, turbo MR2s, pink socks and pinstripe skirts, it doesn't matter what other people think. Do what you like.

I think it's a cool idea. You'd have a massive trunk and a tiny cockpit, and I think it could be pretty sweet. Post pics if you do it.

I was happy when I heard my car ran 10s. Then I found out that was 0-60.

making the car a no post two seater coupe would be awesome if you have any welding skills. See a 1st gen camaro for the no post part. Im working on making my 68 firebird a 2 seater with a convertible type waterfall cover behind the front seats like a convertible corvette basically. Storage in the back seat area will be accessed by folding the seat backs forward. This gives you a place to keep a spare tire, tools, extra fluids and parts, luggage, and anything else you can think of while having a sound system and a clean finished trunk for shows. I like this idea myself, but I havent seen it done very much.

Yeah no big deal, I asked for opinions and got them, I'm thankful to everyone who contributes. If you save me from a terrible idea that's fine, saves me time and effort.

I still don't quite understand what no post means?

Re: Aproach with open mind - 2 seater conversion

just had a thought about my no post idea. How about taking all the window components and the doors from a convertible? That eliminates the windows, then you would just have to figure out the weatherstriping on top of the windows. I think having one big opening on the side with the windows down would make this 2 seater idea look right...otherwise it might look funky with out worthless back windows.
