Headliner Dye Changes Texture?
Friday, May 12, 2006 8:08 AM
I dyed my headliner yesterday with the Dupli-Color spray stuff, color is nice and even, seems OK but the headliner texture is now very stiff and does not have the stock feel like everyone said it would.

This is no big deal, because I don't sit around all day and feel the headliner but I wanted to make sure I didnt scerw anything up...

Thanks!

Steve

PS - No one told me about the zillion wires that are taped to the top of this %$#@! thing

Can't wait to attempt getting this thing back in the car next week...I've got 4 tweeters up there and have to figure out where all these wires fit in.

as it drys/cures it lose's alot of the stiffness (kinda like hair spray over time) but it will still be a little crunchy but looks wise it will look (not feel) like stock fabric. had mine done almost a year now hasn't really bothered me.

I would recommend letting it set for a while. I let mine go overnight, and it's rubbed off/faded a bit where the visors rub against it.. Eventually I'm just going to recover the visors anyways since they turned out like crap due to the godforsaken airbag sticker being practrically embedded in the visor, and when I do, I'll retouch those areas of the headliner. It looks @!#$ awesome everywhere else though.

Oh and yes.. the wire amount is insane.. especially if you have a sunroof.. good lord.

Yeah, man - my wiring situation sucked.

I have a sunroof, 4 tweeters, map lights, XM radio antenna and XM wiring going back to the trunk (I removed the headliner in part to remove all of the XM equipment since I have a new head unit and antenna for that).

Hey Big Boi, thanks for all of the tips on how to do this - hopefully it will be a little less crunchy soon!

And I saw that you were in some movie called "ATL" - congrats!

another option to make it softer is, lightly brush it with a boar's hair/nylon brush.

this is what they look like.

I used one to help remove/cleanup some glue that i got on headliner, installing my CF sunroof switch panel.

since its dyed your just knocking off some of the extra dye that is dryed on there. (that causes the stiffness).

i would spot test it some were outta sight (i used the corner of the headliner that eventually will be hidden by the rear panels) to make sure your dye is dark enough/soaked in. so it wont make it look too grey.

this will take a little of the shinyness away from the color too. < which could be good or bad depending on the look your going for.

also let me urge LIGHTLY BRUSH or you will see lines.

I planned on just recovering the headliner and visors to a color more to my liking and matching the rest of the car. I did not know about all the wires up there though.

I did the same thing and mine turned out all crunchy. My Cavy is a solid roof 04. WTF was GM thinking when they changed 'em all to tan in 00?! I don't like this crunchy feel so, I am just gonna locate a solid roof 95-99 donor to get the rear package tray without third brake light or hooks and the headliner from so that they will be gray.

I've been thinking about doing this for a while, but I'd want to match the interior up better. How well do you guys think this fabric spray will hold up on an application for a seat (thinking about my rear seat). I doubt it would hold up too well but at least its worth asking. Not too many people use my rear seat anyway, but I wouldn't want it coming off after a few passengers.

I'm just removing the old headliner material and relining it with some black ABS material used in a Corvette interior. A friend of mine has a whole roll of it and said I can use it if I want. I'm doing the same for my beater truck since the headliner in the truck is sagging quite a bit.

What are you guys doing about the plastic trim pieces that go around the sunroof? (mines tan also)

are you using the same fabric die/paint on those as well?

one more thing...the visors.

Does the mirror section pop out?

What about the strap?

the dye is a fabric/vinyl dye so i just used it on the plastic trim pieces, it stays flexible ive removed them several times since withn no cracks/or chips.

yes the mirror is like a piece of folded cardboard in the center and the mirror is held on with two tabs up top and two push pin things at the bottom( very easy to see when you take your visors apart)

got rid of it the airbag sticker on my visors ruined the material. So i ended up just using the old material as a pattern for my new stuff and then just hotglued it all back together.

Keep in mind that you can buy that trim around the Sunroof in black. That's what I did. They call it a lace.

Would any of you guys know the answer to my previous question? I'm not trying to thread jack but I would like to know if the spray dye would hold up on my back seat?

if it hardly ever gets used ,sure, but i would be carefull if you have some one going to ride back there. it is a dye so i wouldn't worry a bout the wear if the back seat is used very lightly.

But,

I would let it dry for atleast a month before i would even chance it with some one back there(so it can compleatly cure and then some), and when i did let some one sit on it, i would have them sit on newspaper for the first time, that way incase it does run/bleed it will go in the paper not there clothes.
