replace Manual @!#$ knob? How?
Monday, July 17, 2006 9:50 PM
I did search but couldn't find an answer, how do i remove the knob thats on there now and replace it? or do i need to buy a new kit thingy? I Heard about the B&M short shifter, but A) where do i get it, and B) How hard is it to install?

You have to like.. destroy it. Cut at it. Or you can yank at it forever til it pops off. The B&M short shifter you can get from carcustoms.net or gravanatuning.com, same price at both place. It's not hard to install. I'm about to get mine soon and I've read the instructions from wild weasel's site and took a look at my shifter and I understood it completely. The install page is here. http://www.wildweasel.ca/j-body/HowTo/BMShifter.asp If you don't get the instructions, take off your shift boot while your car is off and move it around then you'll get it.

theres a clip in the front of the shift knob. pull it out and it will come off. as for the short throw you can get it from either karo at carcustoms or jim at gravana

Yeah there is a clip in it if you have an auto matic car. If not you have to pull and yank it with all your mite!!! But you will not have any pins in it at all unless you have an auto matic but if you do I doubt you would be looking for a short throw shifter...

lol, damn didn't know there was that much work involved :S sucks they dont make a bolt on short shifter for the 95-99's :S save us some hassle. GOod thing i just bought a dremel though Gunna be nervous if i try this cuz ive never grinded a thing in my life , the cutting of the base itn't a problem, but i cant see exactly what it was you grinded down in the first few pics.

before grinding, please check for the clip before you destroy your shifter, i know my 98 cav 2.2 manual has the clip, and it comes out very simple with needle nose pliers as mentioned earlier...

Sooooo... your saying that mine may have a clip? If i remove this clip does that somehow mean i dont need to grind anything up? I dont understand really wat you mean Also, on a side note, if for some reason the shifter gets messed up, what kinda cost am i looking at to replace it?

no offense but can you read at all?

there is a U in the front of your shift. look at the front of your shift knob (it faces the radio). there is a little slot in it and there is a U clip in there. take a flat head screw driver and pull it out. once its out you can just pull the knob up and off.

Just to clear something up, when we say there is a U clip in your shift knob, and when we tell you to look at the side facing your radio... you WILL NOT SEE A U... the clip will look like a little slab of metal... when you pull that out... you will see why it is called a U clip...

and I can't imagine if you mess it up by grinding, that it will be too costly... if you want to replace the whole assembly, that will cost some money... but there are always ways around screw ups... most of the time at the least...

I was merely asking if perhaps there was a clip on the assembly somewhere that i am supposed to pull out that will let the shifter come right out. Just didn't understand ReViVedcLoWn's post.

i figure the 99 and 00+ knobs are the same on the manual, give it a good strong twist, and from there it should pull off. basically i think its glued on.

A) carcustoms
B) 2 hours, comes with good instructions. you will need to remove the centre console

well to me that doesnt sound anything like your talking about removing the assembly but i can tell you how

1} take the clip off and remove the shift knob
2) pull off plastic piece around around the shifter (it snaps to the center console)
3) remove bolt under plastic piece and 2 bolts at the bottom off the center console (open the lid and theres 2 at the bottom)
4) take center console out of car
5) unhook shift cables from the shifter (works with a flath head screw driver but you have to pull kinda hard)
6) take the 4 bolts off the assembly (1 on each corner)
7) remove assembly

Here's the FACTS.

95-99 (isuzu) manual knobs have a clip on the front. Pry it out and the knob comes off easy.

00-05 (getrag) manual knobs do not. They're press fit. Click my sig for the instructions on removing them.

All auto tranny knobs have a clip.

NOW STOP POSTING WHEN YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT THE HELL YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT.

You're just going to confuse the hell out of the poor saps who are trying to change their knobs!!

Im assuming with the 00-95 you meant 00-05? not to be dickish, just some people might be confused

00-95 Twist and pull. Dont worry about breaking anything and if you ever want your stock shifter back just rough the tip of the metal with a file and put epoxy glue in it. (if you just want to cut your knob)
