Use cellophane to change backlight color?

Wondering if anyone ever did this and how well it worked. It seems it'd be easier than soldering in new bulbs, especially since I don't have a soldering iron. I've got my dash apart to wire in some new gauges up to the dimmer switch and I thought while I'm at it, why not match my interior lights to my stereo and amp rack.

sounds like it could work.

it will work, but light output will be decreased compared to stock of course, and will be a lot less than replacement led's.

Eh, I usually have my dash lights dimmed anyway so that's not a big issue. I'd just turn up the dimmer to compensate.

Ive used some in my hvac for a teal/blue color. It does work, but like someone else mentioned above it will decrease the light output.

Well, let me ask you this, since you've done it. Are we talking full light output with the film comparable to that of the light output with the dimmer at maybe 50% on stock lighting? Because that's about where I have it normally. Full bright hurts my eyes. I also want to do this because my eyes are more sensitive to light and I've noticed that colored light like red or blue is easier on my eyes. The lighting on my amps and head unit can be set for different colors so being able to match everything is jsut a pleasant side effect.

It all depends on how many layers of the cellophane you have. Just try it with a different number of layers until you find the output youre looking for.

You have a 97... you wouldn't have to solder in the bulbs in the cluster.

According to the how-to I found I do. I'll look for it again.

you do not have to solder the bulbs its an option not needed tho

You just pop out the old bulbs straighten the leads on the new bulb and put them in thats it.

10 min job hardest part is to pop out the original bulbs i just used a small drill bit and popped the bulbs out of the socket

Well that makes me feel a little better. What kind of bulb do I need again? I can't remember if it was on that how-to or not.

Correct.

Check the 15 page thread on how to change your cluster lights for more info. Trust me on the no soldering, I have a 98 and have done this mod
