5spd Shifter Boot Removal / Repair
Wednesday, March 14, 2007 6:21 AM
My shifter boot has become loose. I guess the best way to explain it is... it moves forward and back when I shift from first gear(moves forward) to second gear(slides backward), third (moves forward), then fourth gear(moves back).

It's driving me crazy that it isnt stationary anymore and the noise it makes moving back/forward is making me crazy. The bottom part where it attaches to the console is really loose and I can almost pop it out.

Ok I havent really had to much time to look at it. But is there a plastic or medal ring underneith the boot that holds it tight in in the console hole? Can this be fixed or tightened back up? Or should I look at ordering another one from the dealer?

Do I have to remove the console to fix it from underneith? b/c when I tried to undo the bottons I couldnt really see down in there. So I stuck my hand down in there but didnt really know what I was feeling for.

Any help or pictures would be appriciated.

Regards,

take your shift knob off and pop that panel off (its just clipped in place). then you can look at it from the bottom. i believe its just a plastic trim that hold it in place.

So ill pop the knob off. Then just pop the leather boot off? or are you refering to pulling the console out to see from underneith?

the trim that the boot is connected too. it snaps onto the console. you can remove it sperately

The one thing I dont understand it how it has become so loose and moving back/forward. Maybe that trim piece if broke.

You don't have to remove the shift knob. Undo the two snaps and the boot will lift up over the knob.

Squeeze the base at the bottom (you'll feel the bracket under the vinyl) and push it slightly forward to pop the back of it up and off the console. Then it'll lift right off.

I suspect one of the clips broke off.

It's the plastic clips breaking off. Just silicone it down and it will stay put. It's what I did.

I popped off the shift boot last night. I didnt need to pop the knob off b/c of the snaps on the boot like wild weasel said. Squeezed it a little and now I know why it's moving back/forth. The front tab is broken off. How this would happen I dont know.

I thought about trying to silicone or crazy glue a tab back on but figured it would just break off again. I'll find out how much a new one is from the dealer even thought I know it will probably cost an arm and a leg. But if it costs to much them I'll figure out something to get that tab back on there.

^^^^ You're best to replace it if you can. Gluing just the tab on does not work. It eventually breaks off again. The silicone holds well. I've had it on for 4 years and never popped off yet.

Actually, the '00-'05 manual shift boots aren't too bad on GM Parts Direct; $26.01 plus shipping. The part number is: #22630142.

I would order one from GM parts direct but they dont ship to canada. I went through a whole big cafuffle with them at xmas when they had the GM SC kit on sale I tried everything to get them to ship it up here. Even getting a it sent up on our own company UPS account and call a driver to pickup at there location. Anyways they were difficult to deal with.

I would have tried a scap yard but I dont have much time being so busy with work and weekends are usually full so I paid the $67 canadian for a new one. Popped it in yesterday afternoon and now it's nice and tight in there and my shifts are nice and quiet forward and back.

GMPD is a scam. They wouldn't let you pick it up because they make their money on the shipping. They're prices often appear to be low but aren't any different from anyone else once you add in the markup that they pretend is a shipping charge.

GMPD were complete a$$holes about it. Ya they said I could call my own driver and pick it up on our company UPS account to avoid there outrageous shipping costs i thought on my part, but they still wanted to charge me $350USD for shipping and handling.

I went crazy and told them to forget it. I said "I'm going to pay you $350USD for you to put a sticker on the box with my name on it and my driver is going to pick it up?" And they weren't even going to fill out any customs papers either.

Then I have to pay the UPS shipping cost as well and broker fees from UPS. They were toally breaking my balls.

They key here is that they're not charging you for shipping. That's their profit. It's how they pretend to charge less while still making money.

Hell, it may even be some sort of illegal tax avoidance scheme for all I know. I just know it's dishonest and really bothers me.

i hate gmparts direct. they dont even tell you if an order is on back order or not til after you order it. they charge you shipping for every single item even if you order 10 itmes at once you have to pay shipping on all of them. i had to wait 2 months to get bump stops because they were back ordered and after you place your order you cant cancel or return it
