the headliner is easy to take out. would probably be worth the 20min of removal and installation time to get it cleaned.

For my birthday earlier this year I received a Bissel Little Green Machine compact shampooer. I have already used it once on all the fabric in my car, including the headliner. It works great and best of all, it only costs around $70 at Wal-Mart. Well worth the money in my opinion. It's very easy to use and you can see all the dirt and junk getting pulled out of the stuff you clean. My car smelled brand new after I used it. In my opinion it works as well, if not better, than any carpet shampooer that a Car Wash or professional detailer would use.

Whatever you end up using to clean the headliner though, I highly recommend removing it before doing so. It will make it much easier in the long run. Not to mention you won't be getting cleaner dripping down onto your head and all. Just my .02 though.

The Rug Doctor with hand attachment worked well on spot cleaning a headliner, but I never tried hitting the whole headliner.

Hi guys,Well I found this stuff called FOLEX at canadian tire for 10 bucks. Its in the cleaning section with the carpet cleaning stuff, its in a white bottle with green lettering.I have a vibe with tan headliner and it was filthy around the windows and from smoke ,also had some grease on the carpet. This stuff is amazing, just spray it on,wait like 1 minute and wipe with a clean cloth. It's much easier than removing the liner, and it doesnt get too wet.Try it,this stuff rocks.

I would suggest spraying some tuff stuff on a cloth then just rubbing it with the cloth.
