Heads Up Display anyone?
Wednesday, September 28, 2005 9:18 AM
So I've been working on this for the past little while, only finally got motivation to start it up again. HUD is from a Grand Prix. The switch is mounted where the vent used to be. You can see where I cut a 'pocket' in the dash for the HUD to sit. And a comparison picture of where the HUD sits with the cluster in its current position, and how the HUD will sit once I move the cluster forwards. I have a spare sunfire dashpad to cut up. As well, I have the grand prix dash piece which i'm going to use to fibreglass a cover for the HUD. Only thing I need to solve in the 'ghosting' on the windshield. The reflection of the speed shows up twice. Apparently 3M makes a film to prevent this, but they're kinda hard to get a hold of. Here's some pics...I'll update the further with the project I get...

I personally love the socks, lol. should have cut my feet out of the picture. another thing I need to do is reroute the duct for the air conditioning/heat (you can see I had to cut into it, and repair it with duct tape) any suggestions on what type of piping/hose/material I should use? My goal is to get it to fit under the regular sunfire dash, but I'll fibreglass and mound the grand prix dash piece if I have to

what are you gonna use/using to get the signal for the speedometer and such to actually read out on the HUD?

cool idea.

the HUD gets a signal from the VSS, so I just have to splice into the cluster harness to get the signals. same with high beams, turn signals, check engine, low fuel lights. had a readout for the radio station, but I dont have a factory deck, so I dont think I can get that to work. I originally shot for the top and was going to use one from a corvette (had rpm's on the HUD as well), but the unit was freakin huge. So I'll stick with this one for now...

^ It projects info on the windshield so you don't have to take your eyes off the road to see how fast your going, revs, etc

I hope you realize that the Grand Prix HUD also has a special coating on the windshield in that area for you to actually see the reflection. It's going to be pretty dim during sunny driving without it as well as it might be hella bright during the night to the point of really distracting you. Just a thought. In any event, best of luck to your project.

gotta keep on readin' boy On the switch there is a dial to control how dim/bright the reflection is, so I can turn it up during the day, and turn it down at night. Its all covered my friend....
