So. i was at work the other day ( i work in a body shop) and we had a lexus come in that had been run through a fence. we ended up having to paint almost the whole thing. but to my luck. we got to replace a headlight. inside this headlight was a HID ballast ( i will not be using) and a 9006 Projector (they use them for the fogs im using them differently). so after the vehicle left i pulled the headlight outta the garbage and started hacking it up. i got the Ballast out easy. but i had to cut the lense off for the projector. i brought it home and decided to try to make my own projector headlight. ive been reading about how POOR the output is for all the projector lights that are made for 95-99 and thats why im doing this. also. im on a tight budget and would rather make my own to help learn about other things. (like HID and Projectors). the other projector headlight is in the mail (i found a guy on ebay selling a broken one for 10 bucks hehe) Anwyways. there 2001 Lexus RX300 projectors so. here is the project at hand i only have ONE side started. i still need to make a shroud. . as this was the side i had a spare headlight for. also. FOR ANYBODY THAT HAS A SET OF THE CRAPPY PROJECTOR HEADLIGHTS FROM EBAY OR WHATNOT I WOULD LIKE TO MAYBE WORK OUT A TRADE FOR SOME ALPINE TWEETERS, THEY WORK GREAT. BUT I UPGRADED TO SILK DOMES. ANYWAYS. AS LONG AS THE LENSES ARE IN GOOD CONDITION I WOULD LIKE THEM. THANKS.
anyways. enough of my rambling. heres the piks
First you take the lense off (mine was already off and i cannot find it for the life of me)
then you drill a large hole with a hole saw ( i do not know what size i used)
then you slide the back of the projector in to the hole and screw it in place.
Then heres the nice part. you put the rubber seal grommet thing on the back. everywhere theres a screw. theres a mounting point for them. i couldnt believe they lined up. all you gotta do is drill holes through them and put in your screws.
We then test to see how well it looks. these are using stock 9006 bulbs. which i will be using for a while till i get an HID kit. but as you can see the cutoff line is nice and sharp. if you look in the picture you see a little "brow" above the cuttoff line. that is from light escaping from the vents on the projector and reflecting of the headlight. that will be taken care of with a shroud and some paint. anyways here it is.
OH and dont mind the screws. they will be getting changed out to a lil bit nicer once and ones that are the right lengths. i just used those ones for mock up. even though you wont see them. i still will know. lol
cool project.
it will feel really good to know you did that yourself.
i demand progress pics along the way.
believe me there will be plenty. its SO easy to do. its unreal. i think i did all that in less than an hour.
sweet, nice project! do you happen to know some that will take a 9007 bulb?
couldnt tell you. i honestly dont know much about projectors at all. thats why i took on this project. i just kinda got lucky and happened to find out these were 9006 bulbs ( i will be modifying a set of 9005 for the extra wattage) and they are working perfectly so far.its nice.

Im pretty sure you will not find projectors that use a 9007 bulb. 9007 bulbs use dual filiment (1for low, 1 for high) to switch beams. A projector (if they are bi-xenon) will use a motorized shield to change from high to low beams.
I love threads like these.
nice job, now hurry up and finish

cool deal man
but one question will the lens fit on it? Seems like the projector sticks out too much but it could just be the camera angles.

Alexis: Dustin, you're ghey, lol. I am better. I have tits, and tits rule all.
i thought the same thing. but then. if you go look at your headlights. the lenses stick out way further. i would say maybe and inch to inch and a half. i might mount this one up sometime this weekend and see how she looks.
ok. so upon further review and thanks to SACH. the projector most likely wouldnt have fit behind the lens. so i moved it back a inch or two. heres a pick.

Looking good I have been thinking about working on a set for my car just haven't gotten around to it yet.

yeah. its really easy im still surprised
Easy part is putting them in..... hard parts your going to see later on. i.e making sure it lines up correctly, making a bezel and shroud. Those are going to raise your blood pressure.

shroud shouldnt be to bad. but. we will see. lol. and i dont know if im gonna make a bezel or not yet. just havent decided. and what do you mean lining them up??? aiming them?? cause that shouldnt be to bad either. ill still have full adjustment of the headlight also. so. still not a big deal.
tape the lense on and mount it up then put some light thru it and get about 20ft away from wall and check to make sure ur cut off lines are level and you can adjust them as much as u need before glue them together

call me a negative ned but i still dont think the lense will fit on
If my projector was .5" longer there would be no way it would fit without cutting out some metal behind it.
itl fit. trust me. lol. if not. ill make it.
Great job on the custom work. IMO for projectors, those have some pretty crappy cut off lines & looks blinding to other drivers IMO. But we will see once the project is completed. To early to judge yet.
Keep the post udpated.
its pointed at the roof in one pik and towards a wall in the other. not the best places to check. tonite ill try and get a pik of the cutoff line with the projector mounted to my car.
Hey guys!
I have 3 of these same 99-03 Lexus RX300 projectors if anyone is interested! I purchased 3 extra headlights when i did my own projector conversion in case i messed up my own, and am now left with extra parts.
They're in 100% perfect condition. Just let me know if you want them, and i can give you a quote
