Ragtop Install
Sunday, February 15, 2009 8:56 PM
I searched for a ragtop install earlier in the day however I had no luck. So I figured once I finished up with the install I would post some pictures so others can view in the future.

Exuse the dirty car it's been in the garage for awile with no wash, and now the air tool oil is all over it as well.

On with the pictures...

First this box arrived....

This was a before shot..

Then gathered all the tools needed to complete the job:

After the hole was cut was the only picture I took due to the air tool oil being all over my hands/gloves. No helper to take pictures, sorry!

Car is now full of metal shavings..

Last good picture I took, I still have to purchase "better quality" bolts to complete the install. I should have more pictures of the car in a few weeks after it is back from the paint shop.

Will do Kleindl.

For all information: Following the instructions that come with this kit, it tells you to drill all holes with a 3/16" bit then follow it with a 5/16" bit. However the screws that come with the kit fall through the 5/16" hole. Sooooo I will let everyone know the proper size bolts to get when attempting this install to give it a firm, tight seal.

Either that or DO NOT FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS when it tells you to drill the 5/16" holes.

How much is this to do? I've been wanting a sunroof but this seems like a better choice because I want a big "hole" in my roof haha, any links were I can get this at?

There was a blanket in the car for the shavings, I took it out for the pictures. I doubt everyone wanted to see purple flowers and metal shavings. I just had to cover the few wires that are left in the car. Good news is the car is starting to go "back together" now, and hopefully I will be bringing it to it's first show in June. Scrapin' The Coast which is held in Mississippi.

As for difficulty, if you go by the "template" that they tell you to make it brings the difficulty scale to a 5 of 5. You worry more about the cut, it being even, and the final outcome. I went online and read that it would be a 32 x 31 hole that would need to be cut, got measurements to ensure it would be even and went to town.

Air nipper FTW, and a cut off tool is needed where the support brace runs across the middle of the car. It helps to have a friend there for the install too so the piece of metal doesn't just fall.

I'll be sure not to let you down bro. Lots of ideas come and go but I seem to have been heading down a steady path of mods lately. No major setbacks except the Hurricane seasons here in Louisiana.

I think I'm gonna start saving for this now haha, I'd be really scared to cut into my roof though. Also as far as the car goes it doesn't need any extra bracing or anything? I would think cutting a hole in the roof and cutting a brace that is on the car would take away some of its rigidity

I plan on it Rick, i've been following your build and definatly plan on seeing it in person.

CaviPower1:

No additional brace is "needed" to support anypart of the ragtop. It comes with a powdercoated brace that supports off of the mechanics of the "ragtop".

I just got back from the store from getting the stainless steel bolts and hopefully get more pictures today of the final product.

^^ I think he meant more so is any bracing needed for the car since your cutting a huge hole in the roof lol

Well it's not my daily driver... but as far as bracing is concerned I have the front and rear strut bars as well as a seatbelt harness which acts as a support.

Misunderstood him on that. Thanks Eco for making me aware.

Yeah, I would have got it off your hands but you didn't want to part with it.

I will try to get some more pictures today. HOWEVER this is the status of the car.

I took out the air tank that came with the car, it didn't have a petcock so it was rusting from the inside out. I ordered a chrome tank and I am waiting on arrival of it anyday now, and with the BIGger wheels I cannot move it out of it's parking space because the wheel wells are sitting on the tires.

I will have pictures soon enough I will be putting it all back together and putting it in a paint booth soon enough.

Thanks for the Inspiration Phewes... glad you found the post.
