Another 3400 Cav

This is a little different to the other ones that I have done.
My buddy picked this car up last year with the 3400 already swapped in. The problem is that it was HACKED together big time. Its a 97Z, and they had piggy backed the OBD2 to run with a 2nd Gen Cav 3.1 harness and pcm. It didnt work out well.
When we picked it up, the car didnt run, didn thave functioning brakes and looked like a complete mess.
This is what has happened so far.
We got the car exactly like this...

This was the mess that was visible when the dash was in...

The joke of an engine bay.

Their attempt at a wiring harness.

Now this is what was hiding behind the dash...

After seeing that, it was decided to completely gut the car. Basically use the shell and the engine. Attempting to repair this hackjob would be more frustrating and time consuming than starting fresh. We decided to rewire the complete car as a 2000+. This way, all the gauges and cluster lights would work properly. It would also be alot easier to tune using HPT.
So the harness got the ol' heave ho.

All gone.

Bull@!#$ engine harness.

Since the cooling system was also a complete joke, that went aswell.

Well after that, we took off about 8 months and let the car just sit. There was alot of trouble with the harness. Im not really going to get into what happened, but we finally had it finished last month. Tonight we finally got some time to work on it. I will just copy the post I made onmy local car club
So we FINALLY got back on this thing tonight.
Here is the work from tonight.

This is what the car looked like. It was pretty nasty. I @!#$ you not, about 1/2 of dust on it! lol

The inside, dont worry, stacey had just put those Corona's there, and yes, all 6 were consumed before the night was done.

And finally how the engine bay looked.

The interior and engine harness made by Greg, ready to go in.

Stacey showing it some love before installation.

Run into the engine bay.

Engine harness hooked up. There are a couple wires that need to be extended, but no biggy. Also, the wires that are on top of the transmission still need to be hidden, trust me, you wont see those once Im done

New fuel injectors and harness installed. They are not all the way down because one is missing its cap, so once I get that, it will be put down properly.

Now to the interior. The interior harness is mostly installed. I just need to put the cage back in so I can install the steering column and hook up the rest. I also need it in so I can place the BCM and engine fuse block that has now been moved into the cabin properly.

Hee Hee

I will keep posting pics and updates as we work away at it.

Dude, that sucks. What you end up paying for that backwoods hack job? Never in my life have I ever seen an engine swap go so wrong. I feel for ya man! And can't wait to see how it looks upon completion!

I dunno how to quote multiple people, so I will just answer you individually

Mythod - We knew we were getting a hackjob to start with, we just werent completely sure until we gutted it. I had a feeling when we got it that it was going to have to take this path. I actually prefer this way since I know everything that has gone into it.

Phil - Its fun bringing a car back to life, this one should be breathing pretty soon. I really cant wait till yours does the same thing. Thanx alot aswell I dont really think this takes too much talent. I just take my time and think things through first. It doesnt hurt that this is my 3rd 3400 3rd gen that Im doing

TAbs - You know the deal

If you got it cheap enough, looks like a decent project score. Hopefully the engine is fine. Sucks that you couldn't at least hear the engine first.

You must have missed the one that someone posted here a few years ago that had wire nuts all over the engine bay, then.

Well got more work done on it tonight.
Got the cap and o-ring that was missing for one injector and installed the fuel rail.

Coilpack wiring extended.

All wrapped up, looks stock.

We then turned out attention to the interior.
This is the dash cage before.

After sanding it down and giving it a coat of flat black.

Back in the car.

Steering column back in.

You can see in this pic where the engine fuse block is now located.

And finally, Stacey visualizing

More pics and updates next week.

Well I have some wonderful news. (Sarcasm)
It turns out that the one thing I thought was good on this car, needs to be redone.
The engine sits about 3/4 of an inch lower on the passenger side compared to the drivers side. WTF is wrong with these people??? They welded in all new transmission mounts, do u not think that they would measure first to make it sit square???????????
**** Im pissed about this. So basically, I have to redo EVERYTHING they did. They didnt do one thing correctly.
Some pics to prove their incompatence.
The pass side axle is practically sitting on the cradle, also notice the dogbone mount is on a ridiculous angle, this should be straight.

Its hard to tell in this pic, but the pass side of the rocker cover sits lower than the drivers side.

I did do a little work last night, I changed all the sensors on the front of the engine to accomidate the change to OBD2 and removed all the starter wires and grounds.

I also took a quick look under the car to see how they ****ed up the gas tank, from first glance, it looks like another competely butchered job which will require more work to fix than it should.
Updates when Im ready to not burn this thing to the ground.

Ok, got lots done today.
First of all, the mounting of the engine.
This is the stock bracket from a 95 Grand Am.

Measure .75 inches and mark off.

Then go at it

TeeHee

All done.

Installed, you can tell that the engine sits straight now.

View of axle and lower mount. Notice the Axle is no longer sitting on the frame. The dogdone isnt realy straight. Im going to redrill the hole higher and cut off the bottom of it, its sits pretty low right now.

Staceys other Cav, the old one. The last time it will look this way.

HaaHaa, peepee coming from the hood vent! LOL

Think its just a little dusty?!

This is the 11.25 front conversion from Racetech. As you can tell, it wasnt very well designed. About 25% of the pads sticks out past the rotor. I am going to modify the bracket to move them in.

19s, front sportlines/konis, front brakes installed.

How the old car looks now

Pics of the car now.

Thanx for the help today Dale

Ok Micah! lol
Got alot more done tonight. We have working brakes!!! It Finally is starting to look like a car again and I am happy as a pig in @!#$ to see it like this finally
Racetech 11.25 rear disc conversion is on. They look like @!#$ now, but that will all get fixed up. I needed to get them on to make sure they were actualy done right. From what I see, all I will have to do is figure out something for the parking brake.

Sportlines and konis all around, 19s installed, tails swapped over and back down on the ground

Gotta take about a week off. But I will be back at it next week
