Dyno Results and Video

Well got my boost controller on and made it back on the dyno...Had good luck today, except the fact that I blew the head gasket about a km from my place...glad it didn't let go earlier as its almost a 400km trip to the dyno. Guess I'll order a new one tonight. Anyways, pretty happy with the car. Here are the results:

I have a Cometic Multi Layer Steel Head Gasket...I'm assuming thats what happened....the car is smoking white and coolant is low. Going to pull the plugs tonight, but the oil on the dip stick looks normal but it appears like there is coolant around the reservoir. I'll do some investigating, but pretty sure its the issue. Gonna order a new one from TTR very soon!

On a good note, I can't believe how hard the car pulls....gonna take some getting used to.

Well I went back out and started the car...no white smoke and the car is idling smooth. My coolant was low so I topped it up and let it idle for a bit and it seemed fine. I did go for a drive down the road as I thought it was wet on the passengers side under the reservoir and I noticed there was something that had been abundantly dripping on the road and it looks like it drips into my driveway. Not sure where the coolant would have leaked out of that bad but I need to do some more investigating as it may not be a head gasket. Gonna pull the plugs tomorrow and probably do a compression test.

damn man, that sucks for sure. hopefully she's ok though....

are you 100% sure ur head and block surfaces were straight and true during the build? did you use copper spray on the head gasket? head studs? moly lube on them?

if it keeps doing these things.. well i know it sounds painful and time consuming but if i were you id tear it down and check the head studs.

res cap might not be holding pressure anymore. mine went a while back. when the engine got hot coolant would pour out of the cap all over the bottle and frame and drip onto the ground.

very nice numbers though, congradts! can't wait to see more!

Did you check the waterpump?

I did put ARP studs in the car but thats what I was half debating to take it apart to make sure they are tight....I think I am going to do the more minor things...compression tests and whatnot first...I had the motor professionally built and they were very very surprised to hear about this. I'm sure we'll figure it out, just a matter of time. I filled the coolant back up tonight and the car seemed to idle ok. Going to check for leaks in the morning so I can see whats going on. Maybe I'll have some luck figuring it out in the next day or so. Worse comes to worse a new head gasket will be ordered.

ARP recommends you re-torque the studs after first heat cycle, and then again after a few hundred miles. It is a pain to do on our cars.

Also if head gasket blew ARP recommends replacing the studs.

Looks like your PCV system was having a bit of a hard time, haha

Awesome numbers man.

I was wondering about that. You know what the torque specs are on the head studs? This is my second rebuild for this motor and never re-torqued the studs but if ARP calls for it maybe thats what I need to do.

Am I correct in these torque specs....75-85 ft lbs + 90* turn?

Sucks to hear about the problems tho hope you get them sorted out quick.

Matt, yes. I did 85 + a 90* turn.

As far as retorquing, I am not sure that is needed. I have built my motor twice. This last time back in 08 it was built, torqured the head studs and over the winter last year(2010) I took the cams off to install HO cams. During that time I checked the headstuds to make sure they were still torqued and they were still at 85 lb ft. Do the 85 and you will be fine. Make sure they are lubed good though.

Well after some talking with the builder it may appear that I am getting head lift under boost. I think the OEM torque specs are much lower than what you tighten the ARP studs to. We looked in the book and it only called for 40 ft lbs...so that could be whats going on with my car. Under boost I am getting head lift, causing coolant to leak in and then as the boost stopped the head sealed back down. Hence why its not smoking and appears to be running fine now. I'll keep ya's posted...Hoping to hit the track soon.

^^Sounds like thats the problem if they were only torqued to stock specs.
