VVT for a 2.2 ECOTEC???????
Monday, February 14, 2005 5:02 PM
i have a 04 cavy 2.2 ECOTEC i was looking to add V.V.T. to it. I heard that the new 2.4 is going to have this. i look at the pics at work and found out that the only main differents from the V.V.T. and non-VVT is the cam-shaft act. is was NOT pics of the new 2.4. i have no pic for it because it isn't out yet. i work in parts at a chevy dealership. i want to now how close the cams on the new 2.4 are to the 2.2? if i can get away with just swabing out the cam gears for the act? or i am opening up a can of worms, or is it worth the trouble???

Where in the hell did I say anything about grammar? I just said that VVT isn't an add on, so you can't buy a 2.2 and "think about adding on VVT" it doesn't work like that.

Not to be mean. But do you even know what it is?

it will either advace the value timing, when the value opens or, or retard it. depending on the way it is setup. and i am not confusing vvt with V-tec. it will allow better fuel eco and power.

V-tec uses oil pressure to slide a different cam lobe set-up it place

First off
VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) is an electronic and mechanical system in some Honda engines that allows the engine to have multiple camshafts. VTEC engines have an extra intake cam with its own rocker, which follows this cam. The profile on this cam keeps the intake valve open longer than the other cam profile. At low engine speeds, this rocker is not connected to any valves. At high engine speeds, a piston locks the extra rocker to the two rockers that control the two intake valves.

So not what you are saying.

What you are saying is something simliar to what Ferrari does. The lobes on some ferrari cams are angled at the length of the cam, so the cam moves it case of a ferrari from front to back, i believe or other way around but you get the idea.

Or maybe im just not understanding what you are meaning.

To be honest with you. I don't think it will work. We will just have to see how GM sets this up. GM have VVT on anything yet? I honestly don't know. VVT and VTEC don't impress me all that much. Its a neat idea, but id just rather have a bigger engine.

BTW..

What kinda of actual expieriance do you have working on cars?

I don't have much, myself.

But that will all change in the fall, muahahaha.

a little. a few auto classes. i work around techs at a chevy dealship \

the new cady northstar 4.9 or 4.6 the one that is in the XLR

the 1.8 in the vibe, prizm.

that is all i can think of . the way that i have seen by the gm parts catoulge that they have cam gears that have spring that advace the timing i think. i have only pics to go by so i am not too sure.

Well that's not really fair. Note that valve timing is only optimized at a single RPM and that at all other RPM's you're making a compromise.

With that in mind, the ability to adjust the timing for the RPM means the engine can make more power across a wider RPM range. That's a huge benefit regardless of the size of the engine.

It's normally associated with small high-revving import engines because they use it as a means of getting better fuel economy while still having respectable power levels.

VVT on the vibes is a Toyota design. I wouldn' eb suprised if thats were GM got it's R&D from.

VVT on an Eco is not out yet therefore, nobdy has been able to open it up and see it. It might bolt onto a 2.2 but we won't know until it gets out and somebody tears it down. Much like the 2.3, 2.4 Quad family has been discovered. Somebody sat down and tore down the engines to see what was compatable.

As for what it does, it has been explained by now.

the ONLY way i could see it working as an "add on" is if you could use the 2.4 head. VVT is an entire system and you would need the cpu reprogammed and probably the entire head of a 2.4

i remember reading on the gm website that the 2.2 ecotec can accept newer technologies in the future such as vvt. So maybe it wont be hard to install.

It mentions it here on the 2nd page to the left.http://www.gm.com/automotive/gmpowertrain/events/racing/Eco_auto.pdf

I hope vvt will work the 2.2 ecos. I'll will check it out once gm releases the 2.4 ecotec.
