Hey i was wonderin if shifting a sunfireGT (2.4l twin cam) messes up the tranny and motor at all, cause if you manually shift a auto you can wind the gears out before it hits the rev limiter and i was jut wonderin if that messes the car up cause alotta people around me do that cause it makes the exhaust 10 times as loud.
I have heard it can mess up the tranny, but personally i havent seen that happen or anything, so idk.
When you "shift," it doesnt put it right in that gear, it acts as a limiter. For example, you can have it in 2, and it will start at 1 then move to 2, but it wont switch to 3 because the limit is at 2.
It really wont help you get a faster time or anything, just keep it in D.
no the pcm will not let you hurt the tranny even in manual low it will shift the car in to second if it feels to.

I've tried shifting like this before and that never happened to me.
yeah but ive been ridin with friends and they will put it in second and rev it out to like 5,000 rpm's and then let of the gas and shift in 3rd, will that mess it up?
you arent supposed to shift it like that, i think you just move it up while you are on the gas. I think that is bad though.
just stick it in drive and forget it, it will shift as fast as you can anyway if your really stepping on the gas. if your looking for an even quicker shift do a search on the b&m shift kit or the autotrans. and don't even think about a neutral drop into drive..
theres people in my town that do that...one dropped his tranny but i donno if thats why...imo I would be to just let the car shift it's self..the computer can prolly shift faster then you can (Not trying to sound like an @$$hole)

Despite what some will say, manually shifting an auto
will not ruin/destroy/wreck or otherwise seriously damage the transmission!!
Basically by moving the gear selection lever you are just telling the trans what you want it to do, and it will only perform that operation if it deems it appropriate for conditions. So basically it won't allow you to blow the engine by forcing downshifts at high speeds.
If you downshift to 3rd on hills or force a 2nd gear downshift to accelerate faster, that is what the 3,2,1, numbers on the pattern are there for. If they "damaged the transmission" as some of these people claim, they obviously wouldn't put them on there in the first place!!
However, if you abuse the transmission, obviously you are going to run into problems. Excessively holding gears, forcing downshifts at high RPM's, and just plain screwing around is neither good for the engine or the trans, just as it wouldn't be with a manual.
The bottom line is this: Manually shift your auto trans all you want, just do it sensibly and use common sense, and you won't have any problems down the road

But whats the point. If you keep it in drive, it will do the same thing without worring about shifting it. Plus its not the same as a manual, it works like a gear limiter.
Do it if you want, there really is no point, but if you are going 60mph and then put it in 1st, that will probably @!#$ up the tranny.
i shifted up and down..using the correct gear for speed...and using down shifting to pass.......for 116,000 miles and never had any tranny problems whatsoever....so....i would say no damage
Not unintentionally accelerating since 2009!!!!
I manually shift my auto sometimes. I usually mess up like 40% of the time cause when I'm in first I go right into third when I MEANT to go into second! Ack!
manually shifting an auto. you people kill me. that's why its an auto. jeeze.
the ecm and the transmission can do a much better job of shifting than u can. let them do their job.

it can cause problems depending on where you shift it. my buddy blew out his 4rd gear in his z24 by doing this and his car wouldnt go pass 40mph
The only reason I know of for manually shifting an auto is for long descents where you want to save your brakes. If you don't downshift, you can overheat the brakes and cause a crash.
Other than that though... I can't think of any reason. You don't downshift an auto to pass. You just mash the pedal and it downshifts itself.
You don't manually shift to accelerate. You just mash the pedal and it will shift near redline all on its own.
You can start off in 3rd to disable the traction control if your car doesn't have a button to do that. That's about the only useful option for racing I can think of.
dont do that when i was 16 i would do it with my mx6 an sooner or later i had no gears
When you are in 2nd the shift from first to second is much quicker, try it ... its crazy fast compared to if you are in 'Drive'.. I have a 99, with the 4speed.. also when mine is in first it STAYS in first, and I am sure those high revs are not good for the engine over time, the tranny is prolly safe.
Tranny should be okay as long as you dont force a downshift when you are going to fast.. it is true in EXTREME situations the tranny will protect its self by not engaging, but you will know when this happens, its loud and obnoxious clicking sound, unmistakable... ( I have heard it at least once
) 10x more obnoxious than ABS.
3rd just impedes 4th so its good if you are on the expressway and want to pass someone, drop it to 3rd, and at the same time floor it.. INSTANT passing gear when you time it right..
I will also sometimes sustain 1st by leaving it in first, although the shift is super quick while in the 2nd posisition it shifts a little too soon for me, so I will leave it in 1st, wait till I am allthe way thru first, then popit in second, this way I get the benifit of driving all the way thru 1st, and I still get the super quick shift responce by having it in the second posisition while shifting into second, this can be finished by shifting directly into Drive, or 3rd, (sustain 3rd) then Drive.. up to the dirver and the situation.
In my opinion a product like the auto trans interceptor is not needed as long as I can control the shifts, and I get the better responce from first to second..
Not really sure if you get the same 'quick' responce from 2nd to 3rd.. its harder to tell at that speed, and I only have a 2200...
This is just my expierence with my tranny, again its a 99.. so they could have programed the other ones differently so they would perform differently.
See your talking about the 4 seepd, however in the 3 speed, if you down shift from drive into 2nd, you hear a grinding noise and the trann goes back into 3rd. Im guessing a protection thing.
The reason to manually shift into 1st or second, is for towing or going up steep hills. Downshifting to 3rd if you have it or 2nd is good for going down steep grades if the tranny will let you.

stupid idea , if you want to shift buy a stick

I shift my cavy manually sometimes, but not a whole lot.. it does make the muffler immensely louder.. but the fact of the matter is, if you want a quicker shift, and more of a "firmer" shift.. purchase a B&M shifter kit for auto transmission.. It really does help..

i know a dude that tried to show off all the time and shift his automatic honda threw the tranny slick out of it
