My sunfire has 220,000km (140,000 +- miles....i live in Canada, all the mile talk screws me up). It still runs fairly well, but can the engine handle any upgrades? I put an intake on it, but all it did was kill my gas mileage. I was thinking about maybe a pulley, or some headers for now but i dont' want to blow it up.

people tend to do this when they add an intake or exhaust. what they do is floor it anytime they can so they can hear the sound of the intake/exhaust hence why people have crappy MPG after such mods. dissconect your battery for 30 minutes so the computer resets. then drive around normal. no flooring it so you can hear your intake. do that for a week maybe 2.
anyways, people mod there cars with more miles than yours. and if something does go wrong. it gives you an excuse to upgrade your internals. stronger pistons, rods etc etc

I had 238 000km on my Ho and I had a few mods. one of my friend had a 2.4 with 350 000km and he put a turbo on it.
the mileage doesn't really change anything. It's more the condition of the engine.

Yeah, the lead foot often comes along with the intake mods.
If you're trying to save gas, an intake can actually make your engine slightly more efficient (barely, but slightly) so it should actually benefit your mileage. Just make a conscious effort to do so or you'll find the "lead foot = cool noise" phenomenon emptying your tank.
As for when you should stop considering modding... that all depends on what your future plans are for the car. If it were me.... there's two ways I'd look at your car. If the body is in great shape and I intended to keep it for another 5-10 years then I'd go ahead and mod it on the assumption that when the engine gives up the ghost, you'll just drop a new one in.
If, on the other hand, a dead engine means you'll just scrap the car then I wouldn't go spending much money on mods that you won't be able to transfer to the next one. I mean, really... how much life do you figure she's got left??
You should be able to drop another engine in there for under a grand though, so if the car's worth it to you then by all means mod 'er up.
i got 144,000+ miles on my Z24 and i put and air ride system on it in september, and i have lambo doors and the technic lip on the way!!! so its like every one said, its up to you on how far you wan to go with it...

Nobody is making you mash the pedal.
Sure, when you put the pedal down further you'll use more gas and it will allow more air through so you can burn it.
But if you don't... then it simply allows the engine to breathe a little easier so you'll need less gas to maintain the same speed.
