New Sunfire on the block
Sunday, March 27, 2005 1:04 PM
Hi everyone. I'm new to the J-body world. Just got a 2003 Pontiac Sunfire with 16,043 miles this past January and I absolutely love this car. Now this is coming from a true newb's stand point... I've been going nuts trying to find out as much information about my car as possible, and what kind of upgrade options are available for it for both style and performance, and when I say performance I'm talkin' racing performance here. I want to make this sucker move fast. My main goal here is to enhance to overall performance of the car to the point of being barely street legal. As for looks, I would like as much information and advice as possible about stuff like bodykits, neons/LEDs, replacement bulb upgrades, etc. Any info on where I can find places that sell lots of pontiac sunfire options and accesories would be helpful too. I've search around and found a few things I like here and there, but it seems like most of the places I've found sell a lot of the same things for 03+ Sunfires, and the options seem pretty limited.

These are some of the things I've found so far for looks and styling that I'm interested in so far (If you have any other cool suggestions or ideas feel free to let me know, lol...):

1) RK Sport Ram Air hood - Carbon Fiber or Fiberglass (whichever is better... )

2) RK Sport Streetfire Body Kit ( Eurethane ) - I'm gonna keep the car the same yellow color when I get this kit, with a few decals probably.

3) Decals. I also have a custom sketch I'm considering ordering a vinyl sheet and cutting my own vinyl decal into for the hood, but if I find something better I'll go that route instead. Here's a few that I've been considering.

4) RKSport Sunfire Spoiler

5) ICELED UFO Ground Lighting Kit from Litewave

I'm also adding tons of neon accents to my interior, as well as major black lighting. I have some bad ass car seat covers in my car that glow under a black light.

6) Last but not least, lambo doors

Here's some pics of my car in it's current state. They were taken with my cell phone so they don't have the greatest resolution.:

DANG! lol, I take too many pictures, lol. As you can see I love my car. I really want to upgrade it's performance though and I have no idea where to start... I'd really appreciate any help and advice you guys can give me so that I can turn this car into a barely street legal racing monster.

Another thing I really would like to find out about is if there are any J-Body clubs or Sunfire specific clubs anywhere near the central Pennsylvania area. I really would like to join a club, but I don't want it to be extremely far away. If there are any other well known J-Body clubs or Sunfire clubs I can join that wouldn't require me to drive half way accross the US 20 times a year, lol, I'd gladly join. I'm looking to eventually bring to Sunfire to car shows, club meetings, and other fun stuff with my car, and meet and learn from other people who are pimping out there own Sunfires. The end I'll shut up now, lol.

instead of the seat covers, drop in some aftermarket seats.. and get some diamond plate floor mats instead

Yep. The car currently only has a 2.2 Ecotec. Like I said, lol, I can handle pimping it out for looks, but when it comes to performance I don't know where to start. Seems like everone says I should swap the 2.2 engine for the 2.4. Where can I find a fresh new 2.4 engine for sale, and how much do you estimate it would cost? Tried looking on line but didn't have much luck. Is an engine swap the first upgrade I should make, or are there other things I should upgrade first?

Whoever suggested doing that swap probably doesn't have a clue what they're talking about.

That would be a whole lot of work to put in an outdated engine with minimal power gains.

So should I just stick with the 2.2 ECOTEC and upgrade on what I have?

ask around the performance forum about your questions. i'm sure you'll get answers for swapping engines. if you want to keep your 2.2, best bet is to find someone that's got one with a good amount of work done and ask them what they did. if you do a search in the performance category for "turboless power" you should get a result. i've got a 200hp goal (no boost or nitrous) on my 2.2 ecotec cavalier.

I'm making the back of my car look good first.
After all, Civics need something nice to look at...

Keep the ECO, it would be a mistake to put the 2.4 in with all the after market stuff that is avalible for the ECO 2.2, its GM's newest economy engine and alot of companies are makeing stuff for it. Plus if your not that familar with engines its will be a little easier to work on compared to the outdated 2.4 (I love my ld9 though, I wouldn't trade it for anything, well maybe a vette).

Godd choice in the ride.

and welcome to the .org

Hit 200 NA it broke once, Hit 213 it broke again,
Hitting 300 NA is further away than I thought.

I think sunfires generally look pretty good with no spoiler at all, take off the stock one. Look at some of the other pictures on the forum and see what you think. I think with the wing and the decals a little to ricey for me, maybe you could just get away with some cool vinyl graphics. Goodluck and keep us updated on your progress,
p.s. Get rid of the Ecotec? WhoTF told you that?
