What mods will void my warranty?
Sunday, April 10, 2005 10:25 AM
Alright guys, I was just wondering what mods I can do to my car without voiding the warranty. It expires in about 10k miles but I dont want to wait to start modding. I've heard that intake doesnt void it but I really want to get my exhaust or a short shifter finished right now. So, my question is- can I do these mods without voiding the warranty? Can I do ANY mods without voiding the warranty?

Thanks guys,
Devon

I dont know where you live cause you DIDNT COMPLETE YOUR PROFILE... you should do that...

Anyways, in Minnesota, it is my understanding the no mods will void a warrenty. Although a dealership will frown upon them, there is nothing they can do and they must fix anything coevered in the warrenty.

Now, they will not fix any of your aftermarket stuff. If the aftermarket stuff replaces a factory part, and something goes wrong, they may replace you aftermarket stuff with new factory stuff.

you should be ok with those mods, just dont get an aftermarket stereo. I went in because of a check engine light, and they immediately blamed it on the stereo, turns out it was a sparkplug...

nothing will really. if you add an intake, then something goes wrong with the car. then the dealship has to prove that the intake caused the problem. look up the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Improvement Act

thanks a lot guys- the only reason I was spooked is because my buddy has an RSX-S and the dealer told him he couldnt even put on an aftermarket MUFFLER let alone cat back because it would void the warranty. So yeah, thanks.

correct that does void the warrenty. If the exhaust piping he replaced gets a hole, they wont warrenty it. If the cat goes, and they blame it on the exhaust, by law they have to prove your aftermarket exhaust caused the problem.

If you get an intake, and the filter falls off and you suck in a leaf and it does something tot he engine, they wont cover the engine under warrenty. Kind of common sense on that stuff

That dealer was lying. Unless of course he wasn't referring to the factory warranty.

When the factory warranty runs out and you get involved in the world of aftermarket extended warranties, then all bets are off. In most cases, none of us should be getting involved with those at all as there's simply nothing left that they might potentially cover.

also, if your car shows excessive wear from street racing or racing in general, they can block out ur remaining warrenty....i just started working at a dealership...kid came in with all sorts of tranny and engine problems but it was obvious he had been beating the @!#$ out of his car....they flagged his warrenty and that was that....

unless the modification is proven to have caused the problem being warrentied.. then nothin will void it.

ok heres what Im worried about. Say something does go wrong and they blame it on a mod I did. Then I would be in a position where I have to explain to THEM why it DIDNT affect what happened. Wouldn't it just be my word against theirs?

Unless it's a female, then do her IDB!!

Like people have stated before, puting on modifications will only void certain aspects of your warranty. Like, say after 2 years of owning the car (30,000 miles) your hood begins rusting on the top. And the only mod you've done is an intake with cat-back exhaust, then the dealer must correct the problem for you, they cannot say your warranty is void because you put an intake and exhaust on.

However, if you get an aftermarket hood, and that hood begins to rust, then no, they don't have to re-paint it for you.

My dad brought his S-10 to get a new rear bumper cuz it was dented by the guy who had it before us. (we bought it used from the dealership, but it still had warrenty)..

They wouldnt fix it cuz it was used, so my dad showed that we still had the warrenty.

Then they said they couldn't fix it cuz it looked like we tried fixing it ourselves, well, my dad said it was the people who had it before us (but it was us...).

Then they said they couldn't fix it cuz it wasnt specifically stated in the warrenty.

The techs were gettin a real cocky look on their face... then my dad smiled, and he mentioned the Magnuson-Moss Warrenty Improvement Act (at the time I didnt know what it was) and the techs looked at each other and told us to hold on for a sec and they left.

Like 15 seconds lader some guy in a suit comes out and says "I understand your having some troubles with your vehicle, we'll get right on that."

So, we got a new bumper. And an air freshener. And a free car wash. And they filled it with gas.

that dent should of been fixed before his dad even got ahold of the truck. so no scamming was involed

Thats exactly why I stated we bought it used from the dealership and it was already damaged. Thanks for the clarification.

Yes and no. If it was there when your dad bought the truck, and nobody said they'd fix it... then it should not have been fixed. That's how he bought it.

Regardless, it is NOT a warranty issue. It would have been an issue with the sales agreement.
