4 door Z24
Tuesday, May 24, 2005 3:04 PM
So I was driving home from work today and saw a 4 door cav with z logo's on it. It also had the z rims and bumpers and everything. I didn't know that they ever made a z in 4 door. Maybe they swapped motors and rims and bumpers though. Or did they make a 4 door Z. Oh yeah and it was the 2000 -- 2002 body style.

Canadians were the only ones who got the Z24's after 2002. In the US it was just known as the LS Sport

All right thanks for the clarification so it sounds like they're pretty rare then if they were only offered in 2002. I guess I've just never seen one before so I thought maybe some one went through all the effort to swap all the z parts onto a sedan, but the driver didn't really look like the type of person that would do anything to mod a car. The driver was a middle age women, not saying women can't mod cars or it couldn't be her husbands or something. Any way thanks for the replies.

So...

What saying is there ARE z24's after 2002, both coupe and sedan. Just as I posted already,

Canadian only or not, they still exist. In all reality, it is LS Sport that is the "bastard" model, as there has always been z24's. Why the US would change the name of a model and change nothing about it is beyond me.

You sound like you do not like US made vehicles? Seems strange the way you word it and yet you own two US made vehicles. If I misunderstood your response, I apologize.

GM had a survey several years ago asking about the 4 door Z24. I responded to that by asking them when were they going to come out with a 4 door Z28 or a 4 door Corvette? Seems to me that the Z24 was and is supposed to be a two door sports model. That is why GM already had/has a 4 door version in the LS.

Because all the other car companies use LS to annotate the high end models of there cars and GM didn't want to be left out. Besides by 2003, the Z moniker was almost completely phased out less the Z71 truck package and the Z06 Vette.

Your logic is faulty. If there were a 4-door Camaro or a 4-door Vette then yes, I'm sure there would be Z versions of them.

Look at the Grand Prix. Should there be no GTP sedans? For cars that are available as sedans, there's no reason not to make a performance version of them. Is it wrong to make an M3 sedan?

You are missing the point I was trying to get across to GM. The Z usage use to go with the sport models; Z28, Z24, Z25 etc... which were two door models. Most sports models only came in two door versions. I was being sarcastic with GM when I entioned the 4 door Caaro and Corvette.

Are you kidding? You're trying to tell us that there is no difference between an LS Sport and the Z24???

The LS Sport was sold as a late model 2002 with the 2.2L Ecotec in it. If you realize, there was also a Z24 2002 model as well. So how can you have a Z24 with a 2.4L motor, and a Z24 with the 2.2L Eco also for the same year? You can't, which is why they changed it to LS Sport.

The 2.2L Ecotec was not introduced for Canada until 2003, which is why no name change was needed because it was a new model year.

So there is your reason why GM changed the name.

Yes, you did misunderstand. It's no biggy, it happens

I was only questioning why they changed the name, nothing more. I love both my North American made cars, and I will be buying another North American made car soon.

That's funny, because I test drove an 02 z24 with the 2.2L Ecotec, as well as an 02 z24 with the 2.4L. So much for your theory I guess. Nice try though.

unless i'm mistaken, there are no AMERICAN 2002 cavalier sedans with the 2.2 ecotec motor wearing the z24 badge. there are 2002 sedans with the ecotec motor that have the same ground effects package but not with the z24 badge.

That's true. As mentioned above, when they switched to the Ecotec engine, they dropped the Z24 name and went with LS Sport in the States.

In Canada, we never dropped the Z24 name. And yes, we had both 2.4L and Ecotec powered Z24's in 2002. What's wrong with that?

Aren't there going to be Cobalt SS's with both the 2.4L and the 2.0L S/C?

That's true right now, because the 2.4L Ecotec is not in production yet. I believe there will later be both offerings available though.

I know they do. I wasn't questioning whether they made them. I was questioning whether he thought they were wrong to do so. He seemed to have something against the idea of a performance car having 4 doors.

Probably doesn't watch enough WRC...

That's exactly what I'm hoping for. By 2009 I'll be sniffing the market for a new car. If by then the Cobalt is available with a 2.4L S/C Ecotec, I'll be very tempted indeed.

But who knows what I'll want by then?

Oh, to stay on topic....

The other day I saw a 2k+ Z24 sedan that was running the 2.4. No reason to be impressed but being the j-body nerd that I am I'll admit that I found it interesting.
