I would like to know how to change the shifter knob on a 2000 cavalier? thx.
It's glued on. I have an 02 and the way I got mine off was to use a strap wrench to twist it loose, and then just lift it off. There are no threads on the shifter itself, so you want to make sure your replacement knob comes with a threaded collar.
I may not be the sharpest crayon in the box, but at least I'm a pretty color
Yeah, it took me forever to figure out that it was glued there on the 02. I was lookin all over the frickin place for a retainer clip of some sort lol.

on ma 02, theres a lever u have to lift up to put it into reverse, is that only with that knob? if i replaced the it would i still need that thing or is it useless once the stock knob is removed?
I didnt have to replace it when I put my knob on. It still worked.
To get the knob off pull and twist.

The reverse lockout IS removeable, and depending on the replacement knob you buy, you may have to remove it. Proble with removing it, though, is that the shifter boot then has nothing to hold it up so you'll either need to get an aftermarket boot to go with your new knob, or just do like I did and find a shifter knob that is reverse lockout compatable.

thats easy to bypass.....once you remove the lockout just put the boot where you want it, and zip tie it......or push it down as far as you can and polish the shift lever, that looks really cool if you have a ball type shift knob

Its not glued on an 00... My 00 has a pin in the front..
my 03 knob kind of screwed off, and my knob was not reverse lock compatable. so i took out the plastic part of the shifter, took it to the grinder and removed only the reverse lock part on the bottom. put it back in and have had no problems since.
alright guys thx for the info i just hope mines one of those that has the pin in it.....Where could i get another knob that looks cool and have the reverse lockout on it????
Eric --- Specify if you have an auto or manual tranny? I know you mentioned reverse lockout in the post above this, but just verify because people with auto advice are replying as well as manual.

anyone know how big the shaft is on the auto shifter? i have a 2000 but i'm assuming they wouldn't change the sizes very much over the years.
oh yea, also, somehow my shifter shaft rusted or whatever so i want to repaint it. what type of paint would people recommend?
All 00+ manuals have a press-fit knob. The shaft is gnurled and the knob is pressed on. No threads. No clips. Some of them come off easier than others. I believe the plastic ones come off pretty much intact while the leather wrapped ones that come on some of the Sunfires tend to end up wrecked.
Click my sig for the rest of the details on this. I replaced mine with a MOMO that works with the reverse lifter. I later replaced the stick with the B&M short shifter, keeping the MOMO knob on it.

Wow, didn't know that my 05 sunfire leather wrapped knob was unique. I thought all manual J's had the same knob. Any pics of the all plastic one?

eric mine does you know that...
I'm not going to bother swithing my knob because 1) it's press fitted , and 2) the reverse lockout.
I'll leave well-enough alone. Besides I like the way it looks stock with the diagram on top.
