5 Speed with Cruise Control?
Tuesday, November 08, 2005 12:41 PM
I hope this isn't a topic that has been covered before (forum search gave no results). Anyways, I am seriously considering buying a 1997 Z24, however, when comparing different advertisements, I was a little confused. Many of these ads state that the car is 5-speed (manual) and has cruise control. I thought that cruise was only available on automatics. Any and all input would be greatly appreciated. If cruise is actually availabe on manuals, does it only function in the top gear?

ps...this is my first time posting, so go easy on me...

All CC does it control your throttle body using a computer. Works exactly the same on a manual as it does on an auto except that pushing in the clutch disengages it just like pressing the brake does.

hold on...on an auto, with the cruise set, doesn't it control the tranny. like going up a hill with the cruise set, it downshifts to keep the speed doesn't it? how would that work with a manual tranny?

^^^Well I know personally that it stays in gear with a manual.

Besides it doesnt control the tranny physically like WW said it controls the throttle body and when it accelerates to keep up your speed it will downshift.

so basically in a manual, it'll just take longer for the car to get back up to speed because the increase in throttle won't make the tranny downshift?

That's correct. If the hill is so steep that you can't do it in the gear you're in, then you'd better take some sort of action.

The cruise control system is basically a robot for the gas pedal.

yea, where are you guys using cruise control that makes you slow down 25 mph or something?! I use it on the interstate only.

On a hill? Not sure where you are, but our interstates here go through mountains and valleys. It's rarely ever just "flat highway".

cruise control just counts the revolutions / <insert time here> on either the driveshaft or the tranny. Then it attempts to maintain that rate via throttle control..

My 03 Fire 5spd has it, since I added the header, I havn't had to downshift on hills anymore

In vehicles w/ cruise that have a manual tranny, the PCM will cut out the cruise if/when the speed drops a certain amount from the set speed; usually a drop in 10 mph is enough to trigger it. Also, with some there is a minimum speed at which the cruise can be used, say, 35 or 40 mph.

Ive got cruise on my Sunfire with a 5spd, and like the other guys said, it holds speed basicly, doesnt care about RPM (atleast on a manual, cant remember on my Sunbird which was an Auto).

Try driving my 91 ford F-150, with the 4.9L straight 6 5spd with 150XXX miles on it up those big hills

i honestly loose speed, i can shift down to 4th but it doesnt help any just wastes gas.... and considering i can only do about 70 max speed to begin with lol it's no fun
