A/C and Radiator Fan
Thursday, April 20, 2006 7:10 PM
HI all,
Whenever I turn on my A/C it works, but my radiator fan turns on also. And as soon as I turn off my A/C the radiator fan turns off. Could there be a short circuit somewhere?
The radiator fan works to stop the car from overheating as normal.

Please Help!

No worries. The rad fan comes on when you turn on your A/C because the A/C condensor is right in front of the rad. The fan comes on to force air through.

It's by design, and nothing to worry about.

Yeah but I never noticed the fan coming on before with the A/C. And it makes the car vibrate quite abit, especially at low speed. Other than that the cars running normal.

One other problem that I have is the passenger side electric window. (Its a z24 1999)
The window works fine for about 1 minute up and down, but then it just dies, stops working all of sudden. Then when the ignition off and back on after a while it works and then stops again. Could it be the motor?

As stated the radiator fan automatically comes on if you turn the compressor on just as with your defrost it automatically comes on then too i believe because of the compressor being on also, if you don't have the ac on and the engine temp gets to i'm going to say at least 220, 225 somewhere in there possibly even lower than that. The fan will come on but chances are by that point it's going to stay on for a couple minutes after the car is shut down due to the extreme heat from the motor and then once the motor is suffciently cool the fan will turn itself off.

Just did the fan switch written up by wild weasel today. I don't understand why car markers want the car to get so damn hot before turning on the fan, but as already stated it is normal. Now that I'm thinking of it a lot of cars have two fans, one that comes on for the condensor and the other for the radiator. Guess GM saved a buck here.

It's weird that gm would do that on their small cars though because we have an 03 buick century with the 3.1 6 and it has dual fans

Actually half j since you mentioned your alero has twin fans do you know does the achieva have twin fans also, i think they're both the same engine aren't they the 2.4

both came with the 2.4 , i did a lil resurch and it shows the achevia being a single fan set up...i bealive the L bodys ( i think thats what it was) it, the older grand ams, beretta's were single fan.

when the grand am changed to the n bodys in 99...the achevia got replaced the alero, 99+grand am 98+ cutless and malibu all got the dual set up

Note that the vibrations aren't from the fan. They're from the extra load on the engine due to the A/C compressor being engaged.

I believe at least part of the decision to use a single or dual fans has to do with available space. If you have a rectangular area to work with, it makes more sense to put two fans beside one another than to put one in the middle, right?

and cooling needs...of course the raidator will have changed due to cooling needs also

I didn't Realize the single fan setups were right in the middle like cars of the 80's , half J when was the last year they made the olds cutlass ,not the older one the newer one i was thinking 01 or 02 did that have a single fan setup or did it have dual fans.

oops i made a small error...the last gen cutless started in 97 and ended in 99 because of the alero took over its spot in the N bodys...what ive seen shows it as a dual fan set up but i guess the cutless was only avaliable with the 3.1 if that makes any diffrence to you
