R.I.P. Pontiac Solstice & Saturn Sky
Wednesday, July 29, 2009 2:00 PM

Today marks the last day of operation for GM’s Boxwood Road plant in Delaware. The plant built the company’s Kappa-platform roadsters, the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky, as well as the recently introduced Solstice Coupe. The Pontiac Solstice was first revealed at the 2002 Detroit auto show and went on sale in late 2005; the Saturn Sky launched a few months later. Yet in the wake of bankruptcy and restructuring, GM has killed off Pontiac and is looking to sell Saturn, leading to the demise of the Kappa twins.
The Boxwood plant had been open since 1947 and was, according to USA Today, the last automotive plant in Delaware. Delawareonline.com reports that the last vehicle made was a silver Pontiac Solstice.

[quote=97cavie24ls(™)]cause GM screwed them up to begin with GM scrwed up the coupe big time, but the roadsters are solid, especially the GXP/redline models. Where else can you get a convertable with 260 bhp that gets 29mpg highway? And thats underrated IMO as an owner. I've gotten 33mpg mixed driving with a 280whp tune. You couldn't ask for better ride quality and handling for the price. The lnf is solid to at least 400whp also.

It's death is a shame now that breakthroughs are being made to make big power on this platform (read as opening the gates to 500+whp).

The end of this platform cannot be a surprise to anyone, but at least there was a good 4-5 year run.

While GM closing plant after plant makes this less than surprising, I was almost expecting a Chevy version of the roadster to come out in a year or two, especially since it's a high MPG vehicle.

Being that Opel's and Daewoo's version was made at Delaware too, means it gone too.

As much as I liked these cars and as much I'd hate to admit it, but you're 100% correct.
Honda S2000 and Mazda MX-5 was so much better engineered and overall better cars.

Except for these...

as much as i hate to say it , MAZDA , honda , and BMW did better with theirs in most areas , to fit more people out there , the biggest problem with the car is no room , and that is a MAJOR problem

hell your lucky to get a string thong and a few pairs of socks in 1 , if you want the top down

the best chance for any room , woulda been with the coupe , but some DUMB ASS decied to make the window ONLY open , when the hatch is was partially there for the whole thing to open up , the pop up window is barely big enough to get your race suit and helmet inside

not to mention im only 5'10" , and when i sit in the coupe , i bang my head on the wanna be roll bar

the next biggest mess up , was not making the SKY into a coupe , the solstice doesnt have the best looking nose either

1 of the few things we agree on , lol

the only thing GM did right was make them easy to swap a V8 into them , though they coulda been alot lighter , but they do make great race cars , and that is the problem , not everyone wants a race car

S2000 maybe a better with cornering, certainly nowhere close in power

MX5, about as gay of a car as you can possibly buy

The replacement VX220 and Speedster were both on the Solstice/Sky platform as far as I know.

I think we agree on a lot things, especially the Vega. What I meant on I hate admitting (as a GM fan), it is that GM screwed up on this car.

Rodimus Prime wrote:S2000 maybe a better with cornering, certainly nowhere close in power

And yet when it comes to the S2000 it as quick if not has a slight lead over a GXP/RL. So yhea, not close in power, but Honda knows how to get the job done.
I find it ironic that a Cobalt owner would call the MX-5 "gay." But seriously, the engineering that the MX-5 has gone through to make it a fun to drive car is something that sadly you can not find on any GM (except Corvette & Cadillac).
