Mazda 2 will come to the States
Friday, September 18, 2009 10:05 AM

As subcompact-mania takes over the U.S., more automakers are taking a chance on selling their global small cars Stateside. The latest to join the action is Mazda, which just announced that it will bring its Mazda2 to North America in late 2010.

The current Mazda2 debuted at last year's Geneva Motor Show and is lighter than the previous-generation car. It shares its underpinnings with the Ford Fiesta, a small car that will be in the U.S. in limited quantities for publicity purposes before making a full launch next year. Globally, the car is powered by 1.3L and 1.5L gasoline engines, or a 1.4L turbodiesel. The Mazda2 is generally well-received as a sporty, well-mannered small hatchback in Europe, having won multiple European press awards.

Mazda has confirmed that the North American-spec Mazda2 will debut at the 2009 Los Angeles Auto Show. There is no word on whether the car will receive some mild styling changes for the U.S. market, but I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case. Given that both subcompacts are on the same platform, would you opt for a Mazda2 or a Ford Fiesta when both arrive in U.S. showrooms next year? lol

Not too shabby, I think I like the ford better tho. Especially after I herd the rumor of the 4cyl ecoboost as an engine choice!

Cute lil thing. I wonder how it feels & sounds though, that's the one thing I've had a problem with when looking at tiny cars. They're like tin cans.

A far better looking car than the Nissan Versa or Honda Fit. But how interesting that Ford got the better looking twin in this deal.
If i needed or wanted a small car right now, i'd wait for the Ford Fiesta it's the best looking mini car IMHO...well outside of the actual mini that is.

Finally, a subcompact that weighs like a subcompact!!!

I like it, at least the front isn't all smiley faced like the new mazda3. I'll take the 1.5L with a six-speed manual please?
