Im going back to school.. need to find a super reliable DD.
Must be 4 doors and under $5,000
Grand Prix GTP (supercharged)
Blazer 4x4
Honda Civic ( -) too small but super reliable and easy on gas too
Honda Accord?
Cadillac STS or Catera
What do you guys think? any opinions, please fill me in..
Thanks for your time!
02 LS sport sedan. good on gas reliable easy to fix and cheap.
Buick Regal GS. same a Grand prix but cheaper to insure.
late model Integra before they went rsx. Integras came for door with Gsr's decent power fun cheap daily driver.
Seems like a good list except for the caddys....
Do you want a car or an suv? There is literally tons of cars that would fit the bill.
I was looking for a reliable 4x4 suv for my wife in the same price range and decided that a jeep cherokee was perfect. Bought a mint 01 with 75k in that price range. I've seen ton a with 200-300k on them so they'll run forever and parts are cheap.
Do not get a Catera. My dad has an '01. Been nothing but problems. Just my 2 cents.
I also have heard nothing but bad news about the Cateras.
Saab Kit, GM Reflash, 10 psi

RIP JESSE GERARD.....Youll always be in my thoughts and prayers...
DSM. Lol in all seriousness the blazer isn't best gas mileage but reliable as he'll and cheap/easy to work on.
I wouldn't get the blazer. Family have had 2 of them and they were constantly in the shop. Out of that list I'd go with the Accord, and then the GTP
Realistically, I'd say a 4 door J-body. They're pretty reliable, parts are cheap, simple to work on, and you already know how to work on them and what to look for. The thing is to find a good one in good shape, since so many of them are junk.

00-02 accord the v6 model is the better option if you need power, but the 4cyl is a b18 that parts are abundant for.

Almost correct, but its an H-Series motor. Its an H23. 2.3 Liter non-vtec. Parts are still cheap but not near as cheap as the B18 and way less abundant. Its easy to put the Vtec head on though and make yourself a H23 Vtec.
I'd find an eco four door...that's what I'm looking for.
I'd find an eco four door 5 speed ...that's what I'm looking for.
i do also think the blazer can be a great option, but you need to be able to work on the truck yourself. especially knowing how to change the injection spider etc. outside of that these things are dead nut reliable.

Almost correct. It's actually an F series motor. F23A1 VTEC and F23A4 non VTEC.
But on topic, I have had a few Accords, and quite frankly I would recommend one over anything else on your list hands down.
what about a 3800 impala? easy to find, parts are cheap, and the drivetrain is one of the most reliable to date.
Check out my build thread!
Buicks I've had one as a DD, my brother has, my mom has, my dad has, my Aunt has, my cousin has, my grandparents has... All reliable out of them all never had a blown trans or motor ever. I got a LeSabre now with the 3800. Drives great comfortable and I don't stand out at all which is exactly what I want my DD to do.

@!#$ ya got me. I was thinking about the prelude for some reason. Good catch.
I was just in this boat, and any honda (civic/accord) you find for 5k or less will likely have 100k miles or more. That means different things to different people, but if you find one i would at least check it out thoroughly (brakes/tires/plugs/wires/distributor), and unless you can 100% confirm it was serviced, replace the timing belt.
The regal GS is a great value. I found a 2000 w/ 130k for $3800 and that was at a dealer. It was near mint inside and out - great value for the money and even some after market support.
I would try to find a lower milage 4-door eco as stated above as well - should be no prob finding one sub 100k miles for your price.
Honda all the way Darren. There stupid reliable, especially the older ones.
M62, 42's, ZZP 3", ZZP S3 H/E

my votes for a low milage eco. For that kinda of cash you could buy one with next to no miles on it and like everyone said apparently you know J's pretty well. Theres actully a guy that comes to the shop every three weeks for an oil change because all his job requires him to do is drive [not sure what he does never really asked] but his 03[maybe 04 or 05] cavalier eco is pushing 400,000 original and other then oil changes and brakes it hasn't seen any costly repairs since we've been working on it.

My first car was 1989 Buick Century with the 4-Tec (Iron Duke) engine. Stupid reliable. My G-Ma had bought it new. My cousin bought it off her. She hit a deer with it. I bought it and replaced the front panels. Other then that just regular maintenance and we had it until 250k miles. Only reason its gone is the body rusted apart and the top of the gas tank rusted through. Sold it to a local for Tournament of Destruction.
Now our 2003 Buick Rendezvous on the other hand.... Money pit.
