Oh, the wonderful world of HID!!!
Saturday, January 29, 2011 12:15 AM
I just got done installing a set of H4 conversion headlights into my 1987 Accord. I got the whole setup from EGay, it came with the sealed beam conversion housings, the HID bulbs, wiring, ballasts, and mounting brackets.

The light housings are really good quality, alot better than I expected. They are actually glass and are well built. It's a 35 watt, 8000K bulb bi-xenon beam setup. I ended up having to take my front bumper off to fit all the wiring where I wanted it underneath the headlamp assemblies. I ended up mounting the ballasts behind the front bumper assembley, and I have enough slack in the wiring that the housings are able to flip up and down just like they should.

These housings are pretty well designed too. There is minimal side glare, and I have them properly adjusted so they wont blind other drivers. (Believe me, I tested it driving by in my friend's car).

All in all it took me about 3 hours total to swap over to the HID setup. Considering I was working on the ground, in the snow, and never having taken the front bumper off before, I think that I did pretty good!!! :o Someone more experienced with these cars and having lift access could probably have it done in about an hour.

Here is what the kit looked like when I opened it up.

Here is the beam pattern of the lights with the HID bulbs. I adjusted them down a bit to minimize glare for oncoming traffic.

Here is how they looked while testing them out. I still had the front bumper off in this picture as well.

All in all, I think that this is the absolute best mod I have ever done, and probably will do to my Accord (Unless I turbocharge it! ) and it is well worth the $80 that it cost me.

Forced induction, this is what you should be working on.

sweet. open reflector headlights, clear lenses, and HIDs. Not only less effective than if you put them in projector lenses, more annoying. And how retarded is an 87 Accord going to look with "new fancy car" headlights?!?!? lol

On the other hand....you have other fingers.

Only thing I would worry about those conversion housings is that if the back are plastic and actually melting them. Also there seams to be no cutoff pattern as well. I bought some sealed beam conversion housings last year for my Mercedes and they are a diescast metal housing with a glass lense. I have installed HIDS in them and am able to see a cutoff line with the whole setup. BTW its a 1983 300SD

I hate the newer factory projectors that blind the @!#$ out of me. honestly I would rather look at HIDs in stock housings than newer factory HIDs in the projector housings. A little glare is far better than not being able to see a damn thing because the entire inside of your car is as bright as the damn dentist light.

^^ I haven't seen a factory vehicle with glare as bad as HIDs in old style housings.

Agree!! Every car I see with factory HID's look normal (except for maybe a blue tint), but you can always tell people with HID'd in factory housings. You can't see.

idk why everyone complains so much... i'm from San Diego and i would say it's almost to the 50/50
mark now for HID/non-HID and out of that i would say half aren't in projectors... idk if we have just
gotten used to it, but it doesn't bother me one bit and i don't get the traditional flash either...
but yea, it must be a .org thing...
Now that i'm out in Missouri for school i must get asked 10 times a week where i got them cuz people
want to get them too... i haven't gotten flashed once since the semester has started out here in Misery...

Oh, I totally forgot to ask, Roofy... Have you gotten them aligned yet and taken some pics from the driver seat while driving?

The blizzard like weather prevents me from taking any decent pics. But it's honestly not bad at all with glare, and I do see alot better than I did with the old sealed beams. I havent been flashed by other drivers and tested it out with my friend and me driving past each other on the street. I have more problems with some jacked-up hillbillies and their fustercluck of a truck. They ALWAYS blind me, wether coming towards me, or 6 inches away from my rear bumper and lights shining in my rear window.
They cause alot more glare than I ever could.

I hear you on the Blizzard... isn't it fun to drive in?
I hear you on the truck thing too... it's like they try to have as many lights on as possible...
there was a Chevy Silverado that was lifted and literally had like 6 lights on... dual beam headlights and fog lights... all angled up really high from his lift...
fyi cuz i don't keep up on my registry, I have 2 cars... for Missouri(school year) I drive a 2005 PT cruiser 5 spd. and my 2002 2200 ls sport is back home in San Diego... Both of which have HID, the Cav has a bi-xenon 8K kit and the PT has a single beam 10K set-up... both angled down enough to not "blind" people... hahahaaaa...

Did you think before you made that statement? I think not... you just called the city of San Diego ricers...
There are over 3 million people in San Diego and you're saying that all the ones w/ out projectors are ricers...
That would be hundreds of thousands of people you just called ricers... you my friend are a complete idiot...

there is a reason that the lights I mount on my truck (because the factory light blow, just like in a J car, and I cant see @!#$ at night on rural roads) will be mounted down low. They will be below the bumper and aimed in a manner that will not blind other drivers for the brief moment before i turn them off.

Ever had a newer Jaguar pass you? those lights are way to bright and the projector sends light in every direction possible. As I said before, I will take some glare (not as bad for me as standard headlamps) over being blinded by a factory set up that does a damn good job of lighting up the interior of my car.

Its certainly not unimpossible. A whole city full of dickheads who like to be blinded by one anothers headlights.

I love to see an idiot stand up for his idiocracy... pure genius... grow up, the light doesn't hurt, maybe you just need to get used to that fact... get off your cataracts trip and get on w/ life... the supply and demand of the market has reached a point where you can spend more money on regular bulbs or just upgrade to HID for a lesser price... the days of needing to save up hundreds of dollars for a HID kit are over... I spent under a $100 for both kits and harnesses on my cars... The glare you speak of is never as bad as pictures on the web show and to be honest I really think it's only a .org thing... I never hear anyone complain anywhere else except for this one website...

But your right an entire city of over 3 million are dickheads... once again sir... you are a complete idiot...

You're right. The light doesn't hurt . . . Instead, it looks like complete crap cause some jag bag needed to put fancy new lights on a car that ISN'T meant for them. Then they come behind me and the glare is insane and I have to move MY mirrors cause you want to be an ignorant prick? You're right. Awesome logic there stroke.

Educate Yourself
Quote:

OEM RETROFIT VERSUS KIT CONVERSIONS
HID kits commercially available online, at performance shops, and accessory shops include two of the three essential components in HID systems: (1) the HID bulb, and (2) the HID ballast. The missing factor here is (3) the HID optics. The HID optics are the main components that make up a projector/reflector assembly (reflector bowl, lens, shield, D2 base, etc). Without this third leg of the equation, you will still definitely achieve brighter lighting on the road, but you will not achieve the advertised 3200 lumen brightness, you will not achieve the signature color flicker seen in BMWs, and you will not achieve a proper beam pattern.

Above is an 8000K HID kit conversion installed on a GS400 (a1exus) with typical poor cut-off and severe color bleeding above and around the cut-off line, and even in the shadows of the railings. This is just one example of blue light's high-energy wavelengths. All the light above the poorly defined cut-off can be translated into "glare" by other motorists.

Here is a 4100K OEM HID retrofit with sharp, clean cut-off as well as sharp defined beam pattern. The very well defined bounds are created by properly engineered optics used in their intended design. This is a perfect beam pattern. Notice that only the driver-side headlight is on and this is merely half of the light this car will end up producing.
