I have been talking about this a lot on CobaltSS so I might as well just come out with it here. I plan on staging my car hopefully within this next month with income tax money. Here is my kit I am thinking of:
-SIEMENS 60LBS Fuel Injectors with harness
-ZZP 2.7" Pulley
-Stage3 ZZP Heat Exchanger
-Stage2 GM Shortened SC belt
-Colder NGK Iridium spark plugs
-Injen CAI
This will pretty much be a stage 3 Kit. I have looked at a build thread of installing one and it got me really nervous because Ive never worked on an engine with a blower.... or turbo for that matter. BUUUT I think the results for the money will def be worth the effort in the end.
Comments and suggestions are welcome.
What would you be doing for tuning?
Want hub spacers? Shoot me a PM.
That is my second biggest set back. There is a limited selection of people to tune around here and since i dont know much about tuning I dont know if the people around here know what they are talking about. There is a guy on CobaltSS that wants to do my tuning that knows what he is talking about but he is in Kentucky. I have 3 days off a week in a row but the install will take about 2 days I am told and I have also been told it isnt too healthy to drive it without the tune. I have also been told it isnt going to blow up or anything as long as I maintain as low of boost as possible. BLAH this is my first boosted car so I am still learning a lot of things.
I want to get a wind band before I get it tuned as well. I know i have a full 3" exhaust but am not sure if it has the port for the WB on the downpipe.
Suggestions would be extremely appreciated.
FYI it's a WIDE band 02 sensor, not a wind band.
1. Get sweet coilovers and slam it first,
2. Stop making so many effing threads about this car, much easier to track progress in one thread
For tuning contact Oldskool, He is in Reading, PA according to his profile, and many people have been happy with his work. Also putting thoose part on shouldn't take more than a day by yourself if anything, I'd instll the H/E and injen first. Then make a harness for the injectors so it's a plug and play deal when you go to get the thing tuned, and if your using a pulley hub system you can just swap pulley's with the removal of a few screws, no biggie. Good luck

My .02.
-there are a lot of self-proclaimed "tuners" on ss.net, beware
-the install of the parts you listed should not take any knowledgeable person with these cars that long, mine was an afternoon, injectors, hub, heat exchanger
-no way in hell you're going to run 60's with no tuning, and you shouldn't risk hitting any boost if you're going to risk a 2.7 and no tune temporarily
-you can have a bung added to your current downpipe if necessary
To touch on the last reply, ZZP sells a harness to run the 60's and they're fairly cheap.
On an added note I'd consider an Option B setup also to bleed air if anything else from the cooling system, great addition to those mods.
My personal opinion is it is possible to run a more efficient setup for cheaper, which my car has proven, but everyone views the 2.7/60 combo on the stock blower the combo so eh. I've worked on a combination of setups while in VA, and out of the 4 2.7/60 combo cars down there only one truly impressed me.

I knew that I just get it mixed up all the time.Ha.
Mctoad- Sorry man! I dont really have much progress. But as soon as i start to buy Stage parts I will make a single thread and that'll be it other than shoots. And I was already planning on lowering it before the stage kit with my next pay check actually. Im thinking 1.5-1.7 just to be practical considering I live in the mountains and dont want to rip my bumpers off from hitting a bot hole or raccoon.
JCNBST- Thanks man I will pm him sometime soon. And I was planning on buying the 60lbs injectors with harness.
Joe- Dammit this is my problem. I dont know how the hell im going to do all this stuff without running it unless I trailer it or do it in the parking lot of whoever I am getting to tune it. And what setup was the one that stood out?
Thanks a lot guys!
Not really a "Stage" kit. That's all ricer things to say, in my opinion. Also, my car was a proven 2.7 car. Ran its nuts off. I did have a few other things done to it than you. Def get option B as a cooling mod to get rid of the air pockets. For bigger gains, porting your head is where to go. I picked up quite a bit on stock pulley just by doing that.

I have a dual pass end plate I will sell you. The more cooling mods the better!!
I could also flash a tune on for you as well. If you are interested my brother and I are getting our cars tuned by Ryan (P&P Tuning) sometime hopefully next month. He gives us a great deal on a dyno down in dayton. He could knock your car out in a couple runs.
Oh forgot to add look into the ZZP phenolic head to manifold spacer, and the O.E.M. blower to manifold phenolic spacer. It should help with heat soak.
Css is booty.
That is all I can contribute.

That is why you can actually buy stage 1-5 packages on several different sites?
I will have to research what option B is. And I will eventually port my head I am sure but I just got the car and am working my way up the modding poll.
jmarks- PM me a price and do you mean Ryan with the Talon?
JUCN- Sorry once again I am new to boosting so would you mind explaining heat soak for me?
Mike- Haha thanks man. Keep your eye out man, you can get them for some sickening prices nowaday... as did I.
Guess it's all about the deals you run across.
On the lowering subject I'd go with Sportlines honestly if that's the drop you want, I'd question the ride quality with whatever springs ZZP deals. However that's just more opinion, but stock dampening can only do so much. I ran Sportline's on TC struts/shocks, no problem, running Progress springs now as I like the even/no rake but the spring quality is a bit less than the Eibach quality and I can feel it.
I will look into it. I see you seen I was looking to buy the ZZPs. I seen several people on SS.net saying they loved them and that they werent brutal but were stiff.
And I just looked up the sportlines: 1" in the front and 1.3" in the back. Think that is enough drop?

Heat soak happens over time as the blower makes boost by compressing the air, it also heats up the lower manifold. You also get heat fromt the cylinder head and eventually when driving your car you'll notice that it doesn't pull as hard as it did when you first fired it up. So to combat that people recomend running bigger heat exchangers, dual pass endplates, option "b", or phenolic adaptors to help keep heat at bay. I did a test a while back when O.E.M. first came out with the blower to lower manifold phenolic adaptor if you want to read about it
CLICKY
I never got around to testing the O.E.M. spacer and ZZP spacer together as I was in a crunch to get my car together for Cavattack to tune not to long after making this review. Eventually I'd like to test water vs. windsheild washer fluid vs. coolant in the H/E system to see what works the best in the summer so people can get a better idea of how to maximize their cooling in the warmer weather.
hmmm my buddy seth had his turbo balt tuned just a month of two ago in northern WV or southern PA...i can figure out who it was if you'd like. He was real happy with the tune.
CAR IS FOR SALE...Saab Kit, GM Reflash, 10 psi
jucn- Thanks a lot man. That makes sense and I will look into the link you posted.
Pearl- It never hurts to have more options. I have been looking for Oldskool but I am having trouble finding him for some reason.
To be safe with a 2.7" pulley you should run more cooling mods than just the H/E like the option B as mentioned and the dual pass. Tuning the car should be your number 1 priority... if you do not have a shop or reputable tuner close by I would recommend buying a true "stage" kit that comes with a flashed PCM. Where exactly are you located? I'm in NY and could easily tune the car as I've tuned numerous Balts over the years....

Im in central PA near Altoona. And I was told on ss.net that 2.7-2.9 was fine with just a H/E but anything lower scares people almost nomatter what cooling mods they have. lol.
What traction mods do you have to put the power to the ground. yes the combo of cooling and smaller pully are awesome but you can already snap the stock axels like twigs at stock levels. I would sugest rotated mounts if you haven;t gotten them already then cooling then pully/inj/tune.
Not the car, I like the SS.
I was referring to the site haha
I was putting down over 300whp on my Cobalt and never had any issues with my axles. I was running mounts and CABS.
First rule of thumb... do not take everything posted on CSS to be gold... a 2.7" pulley will net you in the 150+ degree IAT temps even with the aftermarket H/E... at those temps it's not friendly to the stock LSJ pistons at all.

Jimmy- My gauge is telling me my cooling temps are around 180 already. Is that what you are referring to?
Mike- I like the folks on there.
nightmare- My car is 100% stock except the full 3" exhaust, strut bar(got it cheap, i know it doesnt help but i couldnt pass it up), and... thats about it so far. Haha. Other than the 2010 front end of course but that doesnt matter.
