So my buddy bought my other buddy's 97 Bonneville because the engine was blown. So the new owner just got a 3.8L engine from a 2000 Grand Prix(salvage yard told him it will work). I go over there with my engine stand to help him unload it off the truck and I noticed a couple of things.
On the new 2000 motor with 61k, on it the engine mounts are on the front above the valve cover that bolts to the core support.
The oil filter housing is level with the engine beside the crank pulley.
Now, on the 97 blown motor the engine mounts are not bolted to the bonny like the 2000 motor would. The engine mount is on the side of the engine on the 97.
The oil filter housing on the 97 is in the same place as the 2000 motor BUT it is angled down and away like to clear the axels.
Are these motors swapable?
I told my buddy no simply because of the oil filter housings being WAY different, im wondering if there are engine spec differences between the two motors and what not. I do not want to swap in this 2000 engine and attempt to fire it up and won't work.
Anybody know these motors?
Thanks.

as far as i know they are all series 2 , and swappable
you would need to remove all the stuff off the newer motor and install the parts from the older one to it

I thought the 97 was 1st series and 00 was series 2?
My wifes 97 GP is a series II, and it is series II until 04 which has the series III. Assuming the Bonneville is the same, I would say they are the same motor, not sure what all needs swapped out though, but should be easy enough.

Bonni's use lower dogbone mounts. All others use the dogbone mounts attached to the uper rad support. Swap mounts around. Don't know about the oil filter angle
Yup, its swapable.
The oil filter housing is removable with 4 bolts. When replacing this, you WILL need a new gasket. When doing this, MAKE SURE the plunger moves freely. If not, the motor will be starved of oil.
Remove all the Grand Prix mounts and re-use the Bonne mounts.
Just finished doing it today.Just swap everything that is different around and it will work just fine.
96 was the start of the series 2 in some models , 97 was the first full year accross the board for the series 2

Ok I knew it was in that year area.
Hey thanks everyone, Yep this 97 motor is a series 2 according to the engine cover. We were looking to see if things could be swapped over but wasnt sure what was behind the oil filter housing at that moment.
Thanks again, this should be fun lol.

All 3800s have a block stamp of the Series btw.
There is a lot of mis-stated info in here regards to some years, mounts etc. I have a 98 series II and my mom's old 96 is a series II and my cousin built over 13 different cars with the series II. No joke it's what he does on the side.
Yes all is swappable and will work in short.
Thanks, we are in the process of stripping the 97 engine still in the car. Damn there are ALOT of damn stupid wires. We are just going to pull the engine and leave the tranny in the car. Good Idea or no? I hate seperating flywheel bolts through the starter hole.

Should just drop the cradle, just easier 4 bolts and you got everything in an easy to reach spot.

Can I use the 2000 year injectors or do I have to use the 97 year from the blown engine? Not sure if there is impedence or lb/ hr difference between the 97 and 00 years.
