Laptop w/o CD drive - HPTuners?
Sunday, November 30, 2008 9:50 AM
Can the entire software be installed from the web? I was thinking of getting one of those little cheapo laptops strictly for tuning (they almost fit in the glove box or center storage). These little things don't have a CD/DVD drive, hence my question about web install. Dell has the MINI9 and best buy has a couple small ones too.

Thanks!

Yes, If you have a Mini-9/No CD-ROM laptop just buy an external CD drive.

The other option is to connect it to a home network, and use another computer with a CD-ROM to install it. You need to enable sharing on the CD-Drive on the workstation. Then you will go to \\computername on the network and double click the CD-ROM or right click and Map it to your computer. Then you can install HPT just like you had a real CD-ROM on your computer.

3rd option is to just copy all the CD-Contents to a USB thumb drive and install it that way.

awesome - thank you. I didn't want to buy an external drive; for the price of that plus the laptop, I could probably just get a laptop w/ the drive. I was thinking of the 3rd option, but sometimes the CDRom's are locked from copying to drives. Cool -300$ laptop, here i come

^ Careful, the Best Buy $300 mini laptops (the EE-PC ones) are Linux based, not Windows.

Ahh.. I see they fixed that. I tried to use it a few months back(switched laptops) and I could not get the drivers to work. It was a dead link....

I have an old laptop that I use for my car. I have an adapter that lets me put a laptop HDD into my tower. I did that, and put 2 partitions on the laptops hard drive (it was a new/blank one btw). On the Primary partition I installed Windows, and on the second one I started copying entire CD's over of things that I need, such as the windows CD itself. So if it needs drivers, it'll look to the other partition as the windows CD.

If the solution to not having a battery for it was just as easy.

Sweet, so it sounds like everything needed can be DL'ed from the web.

Yup, the drivers are on the forum and they always keep that post up to date with the current driver versions. Good luck!

You could, but again, its all available online. If the laptop has the internet then it's a lot easier that way.
