Hood Pins **How to** HELP
Monday, April 04, 2005 12:43 PM
Okay I have a stock CF hood. I m going to pin it. Does anyone have tips on how to do this. I get the idea but what I am worried about is cracking developing in the future around the holes that I am going to drill. I take it that sparco pins are the best does anyone else have opinions( I would like gumetal pins). Oh and does every one still use the regular release latch from inside the car or do you guys disable that feature??? Oh and where do you guys recomend to place the hood pins. I have been searching and I have seen them in all different places.

Thanks JBO!!!!!!!!!!

Im not sure what others will say to this, but this is what we did on my friends car (stock hood).

We found two random, yet simmetric, holes on the bar over the rediator.

Put the pins in the holes so they were up as high as they could be.

Put toothpaste on the top of em, then set the hood on top of them.

Now, you have two toothpaste marks on your hood APPROX. where holes should be.

Keep in mind your hood is in a sense going forward as its closing.

Then we just drilled. Im not sure how CF would differ, though. As for finding where to put holes, that method is probly as good as any.

when you open your hood there are 2 bump stops right on top of the rad. thats where my pins are. my hood was purchased from another member so it already had pins in it, but i still know how to do it. what to want to do is get the pins in. if you have chalk or anything, you can rub it on top of the pins and lower the hood til it hits. this will give you a point to drill. put duct tape on the top of the hood where the bit should come out. (this should help to prevent future cracks and messing up the clear. this is how i cut my splitter) use a small drill bit as a pilot hole. make sure you go slow and take your time or else you'll walk the bit over your hood and leave you with a nice scratch. after you get the small holes in, just work your way up til you get to the desired size. then you can close the hood, put the pins on the hood and see how they look then drill them in. mine are attached w/ double sized 3m tape. it works just as good and is strong

i also put mine whre the bump stops are, i actually drilled out the bumpstops and then use the 2 bolts to tighten the pin into the stop and screwed it back in. The hood rests on them like normal, and the pin comes through.

I lined it up on most hoods u can tell where it is cause it is flattened and semi round , also double layered.

When i drilled I started with the smallest bit i could and put masking tape down so the bit didnt slip and scratch. I drilled from the top down, and used the smallest bit going up a size after each time, I found the best luck with a fast speed and a good amount of pressure on it to prevent cracking, sharp bits help as well.

When u screw the screws in to hold the pin to the hood. PREDRILL, this is where 99% of the people f up and get spiderwebbing. PREDRILL holes with the pin locking device on the hood. Then when you screw the screw in it wont spiderweb out from the pressure. I have no problems with my hood at all, and this is how i did it.

Thanks fellas, I really appreciate you help. Now I just have to pic up my hood pins. I was looking for gunmetal or black hood pins. I have searched but I cant find any. Does anyone know where to pick them up. And yes I have heard that sparco hood pins are the best. Thanks again I'll post pics once I mount the hood!

Use a ribbet gun ...I dropped my car off one day to this import car shop and they just used a ribbet gun to puncture the hood pins onto the hood. They rusted like every week so thats why I am never gonna get it...just my .02 of experience!

not true at all

get 1/2" hood pins...most of the ones you see are either 3/8 or 1/4. Spend a little more and get more.

Not only that, but as people here have mentioned... crappy pins rust!!

I saw a guy at a show nearly unable to open his hood because his cheap locking pins were rusted.

So which pins so I go with? Which pins have the ORG members gone with? I want to make sure I dont get cheap pins. Do you think the pins below are cheap? I like them cause they are gunmetal and they will not stick out as much as the chrome pins?

i would suggest ones that have the clip, not the flip ones like you pictured here. i had ones designed like the ones you're picturing and had problems with one of the rings popping out all the time. for a while i couldnt get the ring back in right and that pin was useless. the ones from jeggs with the clip like that ones used on muscle cars would be your best bet IMO
