Non projector headlights for 97 cav?
Tuesday, September 07, 2010 7:37 AM
So, I bought a set of ebay headlights for my 97 cavy, and I love the halos and the leds on the sides, but I don't like the whole projector setup. With them being ebay brand, they're a little messed up, and I can't finetune them right to be able to see right at night. I think they're messed up, because they look like half moons instead of regular lights, but I don't know if that's how they're supposed to be. I was wondering if there are any halo/led headlights made for my year cavy, nonprojectors, and preferably under 300. Ill post pics later of what I mean with the half moons

only other option is the clear aftermarket headlights you can get then buy the halos and put them in yourself

Post a pic of the light output on a garage or something flat so we can see what your talking about. TO me it sounds like you just don't know what a projector cut off should look like But I could be wrong to since your description sounds right but also could be that they really are messed up..

^ sounds likes its just the projector cutoff. i had the one piece projectors on my cav and couldn't really tell a difference in lightout from the stockers. now the older ebay projectors are a whole other story...

Yeah the old projectors with halogens in them were absolute garbage, but throw a nice 6000k HID in there and they work brilliantly.

I apologize for forgetting to get some pics last night, it was a long day at work lol. But what I mean is that the light output on both head lights comes out kind of like this -> \__/ \__/ Both outputs look like U's, and if that's how it's supposed to come out, that's stupid IMO, because you can't see anything where the projectors cut off the light in the middle of the output.

And Transporter7220, I do have HID's in there (in disregard to the NO HIDs sticker that came on the headlights haha). It is brighter, but I still can't see because of where the light cuts off in the middle.

I will post pics tonight, I promise.

The cutoff is so you don't blind anyone with the HIDs. You should have them aimed so the beam is level. You can still see plenty of the road with the cut offs aimed properly. Once there is no one in front of you you can use the high beams for the added light you want.

What I'm talking about is inside the cut off, here's a sh***y drawing:

Sorry about the double pic post, but what im talking about is in my drawing, where the projectors cut off, there's that spot that light doesn't shine, and I can't see in those areas on both sides, and it's both annoying and dangerous.

It should look something like this, but sometimes there are dead spots in the middle like you are describing. That's just because they are cheap projectors.

That's what I thought they should look like.. Alright, I guess ebay wasn't the brand to go to for headlights haha. Although the side LEDs look pretty good for turn signals, I guess I'll switch over to some better headlights. Any suggestions? I like Anzo, but 300 is a little steep for 2 piece headlights....

Honestly they don't make anything with good projectors in them for our cars. You have to buy retrofits and install them yourself. Retrofit source offers some great kits.

My two piece headlights have pretty decent projectors though, I've been meaning to get a picture of the cutoff at night. They are much better than my stock lamps will Silverstars anyways...

I never had a problem with my one piece headlights, they had the best projectors of any aftermarket headlight I've ever seen.

Get a night picture of yours for sure.

i had the exact same problem with the projectors on my 97. turns out the hid bulb wasnt long enough and was causing the u effect on the floor. so i hollowed out where the bulb goes and used 9006s and fixed the problem. pretty much means my projectors sucked, but thats how i made mine work.

Why don't you just retrofit better projectors into the housing of those lights?

Re: Non projector headlights for 97 cav?

oh, and i took them apart and got rid of the cut offs. there was alot more light. a little too much i think.

Juan, could you throw together a really quick walkthrough for me on how to fab the 9006s in the one-piece headlights, and get rid of the cutoffs? I hate cutoffs, and I'd really like to have a full light output like non-projector lights.

You're just going to start blinding people if you remove the cutoffs, that's a stupid thing to do if you're using HIDs.

it is kind of stupid, people would flash their high beams at me every once and a while but i liked it. you just take the part where the h1 bulb goes and remove the four bolts holding it. there is a half moon plate behind it, you remove that and put back together.

DO NOT take the cutoff out.

That's just a bad idea all around.

We are still waiting for actual pictures of your lights, we are very interested to see this problem you are having that no one else has experienced.

As you can see, I'm missing a big chunk of lighting in the middle, and small slivers at the bottoms of both outputs on both sides

Do you have like a glare cover or something on the HID bulb?

Edit: also, if you remove the cut off in the projector, it's not going to fill in the dead spot, it's just going to start lighting up trees, and last I checked deer don't climb.
