A dark blue, redesigned Cavalier is what I see.
why do i have the feeling that it will compete with the Saturn Ion Redline? 200 hp "excellent dynamic performance?" i put my money on a chevy that can run with the SVT Focus and GTI - more info???
hmmm this is old news but rumored said that there were going to have a SS package. that means a Supercharged car.
I understand that the Pontiac Pursuit (Not the 1987 concept car) will also be manufactured at the Lordstown plant with the Cobalt. Does anyone know if this is a US-bound model?

i hear its going to be a 2.0 liter ecotec motor. That is what they are going to put in the saturn redline. supercharged 2.0 ecotec. 200hp and 200tq.
it will be the same motor as in the saturn Redline.....
actually all of you are wrong. the engine will be an all new 2.4L ecotec with variable valve timing (same thing as honda's Vtec). it will have 170 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque both of which will be available at impressively low rpms!
the 170 hp isnt written in stone just yet the finished product may have more horsepower not to mention the high torque will be available at as low as 2600 rpms and maintain until 5600 rpms!
Its about time! The new 2.4L VVT(LE5) should be a hit!! Glad to see Variable Valve Timing(VVT) on GM engines. I think it opens a bunch of new doors in terms of competitiveness and appeal. More power combined with lighter weight(as compared with non-VVT engines) should yield greater MPG too.

I have a 96 Z24 2.4L manual and it only puts out 150HP stock(GM spec). This new 2.4L gets 20hp more along with more torque in roughly the same package.
One note on VVT. The best I can tell, GM has implemented Cam Phase-changing abilities on this new 2.4L engine. This is where the cam is rotated +/- so many degrees to achieve more output. The actual depth of the intake/exhaust valve is the same. Other manufacturers have VVT with both "Cam Phase" and "Cam Depth"(my word) changes possible. "Cam Depth" changes the amount of air the piston can breathe in during the intake cycle by opening the intake valve more. Presto, more power. I am curious if GM will add this second feature in later engines.
Maybe Gude or another company will offer an aftermarket solution for Cams...
Maybe GM will finally be able to compete with Honda and Ford in the small car market. As to the SS package, GM still needs to work harder on their superchargers. My 95 SuperCoupe Thunderbird 5 -speed with the supercharged 3.8L feels a lot stronger and has more tourqe than the Brand New "SS" Monte Carlo.
I just hope that the aftermarket makes higher quality products for the Cobalt to help it compete with Honda, Toyota & Ford. I am tired of all of the junk on the market for my Cav. I would be willing to pay the extra $ to get Greddy or HKS headers and exhaust.
I think the appearance is nice, but I would like to see more photos, and just to say, it's almost sad that they are replacing the cavalier with this.
From whaqtr i've heard and seen the is a Base LS LT and a SS the base starting off with the 2.2 ecotec the LS and LT should be the 2.4 vvti an the SS is between 200 AND 225hp with the 2.0 SC im sure as gm gets the feedback on the ion redlines bugs they'll be able to up the power on the motor from fine tunning it
it really is starting to grow on me.
The 2.4L ecotec (LE5) is in no way a quad 4. Just because it shares the same displacement, it in no way shape or form shares anything with the quad 4. This ecotec motor will be available as an option in the cobalt. The base motor will be the 2.2 ecotec.
um........chris.......were you aware of the fact that the term quad 4 actually translates directly to the concept of 4 valves incorportated into every cylinder of which there is 4. there is also a "twin cam" engine which is also the same thing, you need 2 cams to operate the 4 valves/cylinder in order to achieve high torque curves. the ecotec incorporates both of these characteristics, but with a little more up to date technology. also if you look at an ecotec head you will notice that it is quite similar in design. also consider the block. the block is also similar in design except it has larger coolant passages and larger oil capacity for cooling. so to sum it all up for you chris i guess you could say that the ecotec is merely a more modern, updated high tech "Quad4"
The name Cobalt is fuggin stupid. Cobalt means power, performance, and strength? Websters says it means "A hard, brittle metallic element, found associated with nickel, silver, lead, copper, and iron ores and resembling nickel and iron in appearance. It is used chiefly for magnetic alloys, high-temperature alloys, and in the form of its salts for blue glass and ceramic pigments." Lets translate shall we....
So the ride is going to be harsh, its gona break a lot, there are other cars in its class but they are all more useful, it kinda looks like everything else, its designed for people who are clingy and have road rage, and it rusts blue. Sounds like a car I want
Seriously though, if they dont come out with a version of this car that can compete with the SRT-4, GM is sunk unless the Redline can do it but I dont think Saturn is really viewed in a popular light by Sport Compact people, not that chevy really is either. I think they are wrong for going with superchargers, turbos are a better option as far as tuning goings and if GM understands Sport Compact people at all they know that everyone wants to modify, modify, modify. Turbos just have more options as far as that goes, blowers are kinda limited plus on small engines they just take too much HP to turn. They are also big torque producers which doesnt work real well on a FWD platform. Just my 2 cents.
I cant keep anything stock....
