Streetracing.

Ok, im aware alot of people really hate streetracing on this board and whatnot, but id like to say, theirs different levels at which people do it. Like i have before, but i only maxed out my 2nd gear a few times, ive never went past about 70 (granted still 20 over, but its better then like 100+ which people on here talk about) and ive never swerved in and out of traffic either, thats stupid.

Now i know people are going to say im a moron for even goin 10-20 mph over the speed limit, and that even racing to the speed limit is stupid, but idk i just wanted a few other opinions.

I also feel the people that dont respect the power of what an object movig at high speeds can do (EX: going 100+ on the thruway for extended periods of time racing someone with traffic around) thats how people get hurt.

thoughts, opinions?

Sound more like your trying to rationalize your actions rather then justify them.

Screw it.

The question is, will the old lady about to pull out of a parking spot anticipate your speed and wait for you to go by, or will she pull out? How much time will you need to avoid the collision... How fast is too fast? Well, nobody really knows until they have an accident.

I see it like this. Simply driving in traffic has risks. The faster you are going the higher the risk. The greater the delta between your speed and traffic's speed, the greater the risk. At some point, the risk becomes very high, and really any time you increase the risk purposefully, you are putting other as risk as well, and that is irresponsible.

We have all done it, and we all speed from time to time (all the time for some). We really shouldn't. It's risky behaviour that endangers not only yourself, but anyone around you. The roads are full of people who do look, and don't anticipate, they are the thing you cannot predict. You will never find a "safe" street to race on because of this, so I guess that means it has to stop.

I'm out on a motorbike most of the summer, and man, I see it all, and it scares me, often. People simply don't look, and when they do, they are still very poor judges of distance and speed. Left turners cut me off all the time. I mean, almost every ride, it's an example of why you can never be sure of what another car will do.

Assume that all other drivers are idiots, and that you are the only sensible person on the road. Drive defensively, leave space at highway speeds, always check you fields of view (ahead, rear, speed, right mirror, left mirror) about every 2 secs, KEEP A BUFFER ZONE AROUND YOU, ALWAYS HAVE AN ESCAPE ROUTE.

If you speed to keep up with traffic, that's fine, just be cognizant that there are people that may think you're going too slow in any lane.

Use the left lane TO PASS ONLY!!!!

And street racing is being irresponsible to yourself, and others. It's not worth the risk, and if you do @!#$ it up, and only take out yourself, you're just dead, if you take out others, you're going to hell. Just thought I'd strike the fear of God into y'all...

Anyhow.. If you do get into an accident on the street, you have to wait to get help, and that could be over 30 mins to wait. At a track, there are emergency crews or at the very least first aid, and someone is watching for a problem.

I am a big believer that people just have to learn on thier own, you can preach all the dangers of street racing you want , but they're not going to listen to you (especially young people who think they are invincible) When they get older and have a buncha tickets, accidents etc. on thier record that's when they'll learn to just slow down and drive like a sensible, normal person.

I rear ended a lady =/ I drive kinda fast and not always the smartest driver. What really pissed me off was I was going about 10mph under the speed limit. Not driving reckless or stupid. I guess I was just a bit too close, my brakes werent as good as hers, and my R/T just wasn't fast enough. I tend to do better when I am speeding because I'm paying more attention.

As far as Street Racing...yea I use to do it and drive like an idiot, but you eventually grow up. Its a stage and everyone goes through it. Some get out of it faster and some are forced to like I was due to the birth of my daughter.

speaking of streeteracing stories...

i was going to pick my brother up from work while his talon's in the shop...I'm at a light behind an older beat up civic atchack with (obviously) nothing but a fartpipe, and across from him was a Toyota Echo, anbd both were getting ready to race...when the light changed, i accellerated normally, and they were flooring it by the sounds of their exhausts, and i still had to slow up because they were accellerating too slow.

I flashed back to the racing story in the library here....

Keep it at the track. You can't, no matter how bright you THINK you are, predict what other traffic is going to do.

wh9o said i was racing? i wasn't. I was just held up from accellerating normally from a stoplight by two streeetracers...i find that hilarious. In other words...it's pretty sad when you're trying to be the badass streetracer, and normal trafic is held up by you being slow

I do agree with yout, though, ALWAYS keep it at the track

racing in a city/urban/suburban area is asking to fill body bags. Where I live, as I have posted before, is in the sticks, the middle of nowhere! There is a road leading from the bridge into Vermont back into New York. It is a mile long straightaway. There is only one house on it and a state park. from 12:30am to about 3am, this road sees NO traffic. That is where we race occassionally. The 1/4 mile is marked out by a bright orange line and that's it. It's nothing like the 50+ people standing around. For the most part, it's just a couple of people.

My one worry while doing this is having a deer jump out in front of me or something fail on the car. We usually only race once or twice and that's it, maybe three or four times a summer. Granted this can't be considered safe, but I think that the risks of killing someone other than ourselves have been weighed and addressed. Like I said, this is a long straightaway, fields on both sides, no traffic after 12:30am, the people I race with do have experience on a track...

For us, going to a dragstrip involves a 70minute drive, 45minute wait at the Canadian border and then a trip back across the border... OR we have to run down to Lebanon Valley which about 2 1/2 hours away. :o(

Racing any other place is just asking to get hurt.

Scott

some times it is hard to get to the track, and some times u have to put the guy with the civic w/ a fat pipe in his place. i think it is unsafe as hell. but getting out of bed is dangerous. i would love to run at the track offical time, safety crews. i get put downs all day at work and some times i like to out accel ppl at light to about the limit or if there is a lane ending. i only raced in the country. because a guy in a moded Zx3 told me that i couldn't drive and that my new car was crap, i just bought it a month before, i was only going to watch. i know i should have challeged him at the local track. but it is hard when it is 11:00 pm. i am the smart shy kid that everybody picks on at school. so i stood up for my-self, for my car. it was fun. but i would perfere great lakes dragaway. it is only a 1/2 ride

Personally aslong as its on a "backroad" and to idiots want to go double the speed limit and hit twisty and die in a burn pile of fire....... heres your keys.

Cause im really tired of dealing with them in traffic. Now if only there was a way to get ride of the slow ones

Its sadistic. I know. And I don't care.

Chris: No one is good enough a driver to wrestle a car to a stop from going at stupid speeds when there's a mechanical failure. going too fast increases stress on the vehicle's components. Also, I figure that if you can't catch a fly in hand at 140mph and let it go alive, then you probably aren't that quick on the reflexes to haul it down when someone pulls a Darwin maneuver. In that case, you're not just killing yourself, you're killing a friend and strangers too. You'r buddy doesn't deserve a car in that case.

Emor8t: If someone wants to kill themselves, I figure a plastic bag over the head and a handfull of barbituates would be safer for the public at large.

thier is insane and there is stupid.

insane is going 120mph down an empty highway(zero cars).

stupid is going 120mph down a highway that has a car or more on it(1 or more).

you should get the idea. it's your choice but if your just insane than more than likely your not gonan kill anyone but yourself. and YOU are the only one who should pay when you decide to do something stupid/insane.
