Limewire, kazaa, winmx, ares, bearshare, etc are all programs used typically to download illegal copies of songs. Itunes, napster and other pay programs are used to download legal copies of songs.
Discussing where to get illegal copies of songs on the forums is not permitted, no matter how carefully you word it.

How's about letting the individual decide what to do?

Sure, then why don't we let the individuals decide if they should speed or not? Why don't we let the individuals decide if they should kill or not. There are laws in place, and when those people break those laws, there is a punishment. This website IS NOT a place to discuss breaking those laws, or how to break them.
Discuss.

Downloading (even copyrighted)music is NOT necessary illegal, any more than me copying my cds so I can leave the originals@home(when you've had a 200+ cd wallet stolen you might do that too). Say I bought a Despised Icon cd, I am free to LEGALLY download that cd as I please.
Although most of this isn't people downloading what they legitimately bought, it does happen. I'm NOT about to re-purchase what I've has stolen from me. let the RIAA come after me LOL. Since I have the CD cases the RIAA can kiss my a$$ in court.
Now I'm fuzzier on this but IIRC people can download something they don't own for evaluation purposes provided they either -
1. Destroy all copies of said intellectual property after 24 hours from initial download
or
2. Purchase said intellectual property within 24 hours from initial download
As I said I'm not 100% on that one but I may look that up later. But I definitely will always try before I buy. I bought maybe 3 cds before Napster came along. I'm a far more into music than I ever was. Purchasing or not, I think its safe to assume that most people using whatever file-sharing program are far more into music because of it.
Lets face it - the people who download w/out buying where never really going to buy anyways. I'd like to see an honest statistic on how many people bought a CD because they heard it first(mostly through downloading) - you won't find that from the RIAA

So do you wanna guess how many people are learning from here how to "throw on NAWS"(lol), then using it to break more laws than I want to know about. Do you think that it isn't a fact that - a large percentage ARE using this(or any modification) to break the law?
You CAN legally use a 230HP 2.4 DOHC(for example). You CAN legally use Kazaa or whatever. Spare me the percentages.
You think you're less liable for someone learning how to go faster from here than learning how to download files from here?!

Now this site doesn't by any means promote driving 100MPH+ down a residential street, but it DOES promote giving your car the power to do so. Some mature/common-sense restraint is implied. So why different with software?
If promoting "software X" is promoting piracy, then promoting speed parts is promoting reckless street races. Both notions are ridiculous. You cannot have it both ways.

"Evaluation purposes" is a farce, and is completely illegal. Once again, JBO won't be a party to it.

Bastardking3000 wrote:See here's the thing about this site's "what you can post" guide lines - Inconsistencies. The NHTSA doesn't shut down websites for discussing upgrades to cars. The RIAA DOES actively pursue shutting down websites encouraging the illegal downloading of music. There is no comparison between the two. If it's such an upstanding and legal activity, and so easy to prove how legal it is, then why did Napster shut down? Why did WinMX's founders shut off their servers without even appearing one day in court? The answer is BECAUSE THEY CANNOT WIN. The law is clear, and now the precedents are clear.
