please...our middle school football team went 0-8.
Tell coach buttercup and team of cupcakes to suck it up like men. It reasons like that why we have dumb rules like the quarterback slide.

Forfeiting isn't sportsmanship.
Transeat In Exemplum: Let this stand as the example.
There was a football team near here that didn't win a game in over 6 years. They have the Illinois state record for most losses in a row at 63. But they have turned it around in the last couple years. They didn't just throw in the towel.

I find it hard how you guys can say it's bad without more info. If a coach with 28 years of experience fears for the safety of his players, then I have to favor his judgement. It's not cancelled because they suck, the season was cancelled because someone could get seriously hurt.
Football only lasts a few years, paralysis is forever.

Maybe the team wouldn't have won any games, but it at least gives the underclassmen field time to learn some skills. What's going to happen next year when they don't have any experienced players on the field?
They should cancel football altogether or drop down to a lesser league. As far as the coach being concerned that kids would get hurt, that's going to happen anyway. Now that there's no more football, those kids are going to be skateboarding, riding their bikes off ramps, etc etc. You can't keep kids in a bubble so no one gets hurt - all you can do is try to teach them about "acceptable risk" and safety equipment.

you can get paralysed driving home today. the best way to get better is by playing teams that are better then you. if a coach fears for someones saftey maybe they should be cut, but i really doubt every kid on his team is so inept at football that their life is in jeapordy.

I don't know. I know the scores are lopsided, but I would think that if a team was getting totally destroyed the scores would be 112-0, or something like that.
The scores they lost with don't seem life threatening. A local school here, Bullard, with only 5 seniors and 6 juniors, have been blown out 184-14 in three games, by squads that are the best in the state. No one is talking about cancelling their season.

thats stupid. ive never heard of a team cancelling their season cuz they sucked.
i think if the coach is saying that he fears the safety of his kids then he didn't coach then well enough and he should be replaced with someone that can 28years experince isn't showing through
Could the coach be more concerned with his win/loss record getting hurt than the players getting hurt?
^^^^i think that may be the reason. I say if that's the case fire the coach and find someone better

biggest crock of @!#$ ever
what does this tell the kids?
it tells them they suck, that no matter how hard they try, they wont be good enough to win
it tells them that there are insurmountable odds at times, and the best thing to do is quit
what a HORRIBLE message sent
my HS football team was atrocious
my cousin was the CENTER and was one of the biggest guys at 5'7" 150lbs
we never won, but god damn we didnt cancel the season
That's gay. My Highschool went something like 6 years without winning a game at one point....and they turned the program around like my Junior year and actually won some games, and did decent in the playoffs...
They were in the same situation for many years, we had like maybe 13 total players on the team, they'd play both sides of the ball, as well as special teams. We never cancelled the season, the players enjoyed playing.
I think we need more info before we pass judgment, if they can barely make a roster, and no JV team, I really can't imagine 120lbs freshmen stuck on the line, playing offence and defence....
Promise that forever we will never get better at growing up and learning to lie
^^^^I could.

There are too many variables to make a decision.
Any of you ever coach a high school sports team?
Neither have I, but I'm managing one right now, so I'm watching some of these kids play hockey. We had to cut a couple because they would get SLAUGHTERED, and hurt badly if they actually played a game. Skating with their heads down, barely skating as it were, deconditioned, they're going to get hurt.
Granted, we didn't cancel the program because of it, but we may have to in a couple years because we barely fielded a team this year, and the prospects for next year don't look good either.
So, while I think cancelling the season is stupid, because I'm sure something could have been done, it's hard to make a decision based on that article.
I do agree with the coach's decision to cancel the season if he fears for the players safety. But at the same time I think that the coach should be fired and replaced. If the players aren't strong enough to atleast maintain some degree of safety, then the coaching staff clearly isn't doing its job. The whole school's football system needs revamped and the feeder programs need to be improved. The only way to do this is by changing coaching staff.
sounds like they have a fag for a coach, football is a game of emotion and attitude, hence the phrase any given sunday
if a team has lost 63 games in a row theres a reason why, its poor leadership, I dont know how big the school is, but i know our senior class only had 78 ppl in it, we were a small school playing the schools with 3200 in a senior class and we used to get beat, because we were playing at a level we didnt belong in, once we started playing other schools our size we started winning our division year after year, maybe they are playing teams they shouldnt be
Its an outrage though, and I feel bad for those kids that they have such a worthless excuse for a coach
